  • Custom Forged FI Piston Pics

    Hey guys,

One of the shops I work with in Colorado sent me a picture message of one of my pistons. This is a forged 8.5:1 CR piston from CP. It was designed based on the 97 DOHC pistons I sent in. He's also waiting on a set of forged rods from Pauter. This should be a heck of a motor once I finish building it. I should also have pictures of my finished rear manifold for the 97 motor tomorrow. So, lots of progress and new parts, but I'm probably still a year away from having it all together and running. Enjoy!

Hell yes! Can't wait to see how this turns out. What are the rods? SBC or something custom?

The rods are 100% custom made solely for the DOHC. They are not modified SBC rods.

Excellent. Glad to see someone is going all out on this.

When you get the parts could you weigh them and compare to stock rods and pistons? Would be interesting to see how much these might improve revability .
Had Pauter already made some rods for a 60V6 before or did you have to provide your desired dimensions?

It sounded like Pauter had inquiries about 60 degree rods, but they didn't have a design in stock. I did supply a two pistons and rods to design the new parts off of.

If you guys are interested in parts, TC Performance (http://www.tcperf.com) is the shop. Tobi is the owner and the guy who built my S2000 motor (and a lot of other parts on that car). I will warn you, the parts are not cheap, but they should be quite strong. I'll definitely update everyone with progress as it happens, but this is going to be a very slow process.

Are you going to ceramic coat them? I am on my next build.

I will be coating the exhaust. I may also send off the pistons to be coated when I send the exhaust parts. I'll probably call Swain Tech and have a chat with them about it before deciding either way.

Given the price of the custom rods, did you consider having high performance aftermarket chevy rods prepped for your build and if so why did you choose the custom route?

I've struggled with this issue quite a bit and there just isn't enough information especially on the newer engines to make me go for custom pistons just yet given the only time I have had a problem with a piston under boost is when there was a problem with the tune. I have yet to see a problem with the stock rods on anyones boosted engine.
