  • Do It Yourself Headers For Lq1

Was thinking today that finding headers for the 1991 - 95 LQ1 is nearly impossible. Buddy of mine in the military is a mechanic, I was thinking of just ripping off my front ex manifold with the cross over pipe still attached and saying to this guy here is what the ports look like, can you get me this manifold with three separate pipe that converge into one? then get him to do the same with the rear manifold, then having a true dual exhaust. Do you guys see this as being costly... If I had a welder at home I'd do it myself.

Can you not just plug the hole in the manifold? Cut three separate holes in it and then weld three 1 or 1.5 inch pipes to the manifold and then converge them? A pipe bender a hammer and a welder aughta work nicely I think. It would look like supreme crap but it would essentially be a header.

Stock manifolds are cast iron. Cannot weld steel to cast iron. Best thing to do if your making headers is to buy a set of stock exhaust manifold gaskets and have a flange made and build your headers from there. Don't press bend the primaries buy mandrel bends an a couple collectors and fab them up from there. NOT a easy Job. Have a professional do it. Don't run true duals, collect the front and rears together. You really have to know the size of primaries and lenth of the primaries or you most likely loose power. its not as easy as welding a couple pipes together you have to "tune" the lenth and size to make power. But hell if Aaron can do it i guess anyone can.... Aaron If you read this, You tha Man!

Shane, I have somebody trying to weld up the stock front manifold into a custom rear turbo manifold using the 3/8" flanges from e-bay right now. I'll let you know how it goes. From what I have heard, lots of grinding, milling, and a few different welding techniques have been used so far!

Monica, I think a turbo setup is actually easier to fabricate than headers for the 95.

This article gives a great explanation of how/why headers work. Also has tips for best performance, and a formula for getting the right lengths to the collectors.

Has ANYONE installed the newest version of the 96-97 headers from Milzy Motorsports?

I'm just curious what anyone has found as to the REAL results from them, regardless of what some have said about them BUT have not had them on there engine themselves.

When you say tree, do you mean like a Sapling or the Mighty OAK? Just curious...

ez112 has a set on his 96 monte carlo z34. i also have a st on my gp but i have not thoroughly tested them b/c my "project" seems to be in a never ending state of limbo and i could not accurately guage them b/c i have some other mods.

i also got mine for a decent price for beta testing them on a 1st gen w-body.

ez112 dynoed his for 12whp and i forget the tq on an untuned pcm but the pcm was also kicking back the timing or something like that b/c it was hitting torque management iirc.

i am sure if you ask him he may have the dyno somewhere or it may be floating around this or mymonte's forum.

Man, hit a pine that is about 8-10inches in diameter. That way it snaps and falls back on the roof too.

yeah man! Thats be cool! We've got this little place out here called raglan pits, you go there to do pretty much anything you want, I mean anything. Shoot guns, drink beer, offroad, WHATEVER! Anyways, I had a 92 black z34 that was just seriously pissing me off, so I took it up there, went over some pretty nice moguls (whoops) slamming the front end rapidly off the ground. I pulled up parrell to another burnt car, sped 50 metres past it, opened the driver side door, reversed into the other car with the door, the door went up, hit the front tire and slammed shut, it still worked.. So I was like okay B****, and smashed out the windshield with a big wrench. My buddy was freaking on me, calm down man, calm down... I was like, don't tell me to calm down. They had this parking sign out there, don't ask me why, but it was in the middle of the dirt pits, I ran the thing over doing 100Km/H. Didn't really do much to the undercarriage except make an assload of sparks... So now buddy is just peakin, I said you wanna try? He was like hell ya (We're both in the armour corp, tank divisions right.) The little bugger hits a wooden dirt bike ramp at like 120 KM/H, we go soaring through the air. I had enough time for him to look at me and me back at him, and go "OH S***." Ok so now the car is making some pretty funny noises from the rear end, we're like whatever, so we are driving into cars, slamming sideways into them, you name it, we were doing it. So we decide to head back to his 92 white zedder for a beer break, on the way there he gets stuck between two steep slopes that block the path, I swear they were just as narrow as the car was wide. He's slamming it between forward and reverse while I'm out there jumping up and down on the hood like an animal, trying to get these tires to contact the ground, eventually we squeeze through. So we have our beer break, a couple of cigarettes later we regain our sanity... not for long, with kevlar helmets back on, we go slamming through the moguls once more, I loose the rad, oh well almost, it came off its mounts but was still attached by the hoses so it was still doing its job. You had to have seen us, there were people out there that said our reverse donuts looked like tornados in the sand. Chris hit a planetoid and we ruptured the oil pan, but who needs oil when you've got sand right? (considering I took off the air intake to get me more HP, just for this event) An hour later dragging the ass end of the car on flat tires, I think the only windows still intact were the tiny rear ones. We get moving pretty good, like 110 KM/H I hit this divot in the trail and the passenger side front tire comes off its mounts (rotor and five bolts, just GONE) and f**ks off into the nearby woods, we tried driving that way but it was no luck. So with our mangled mess, I tried my hardest to sieze the motor, we cut the coolant lines with the sharp end of a hammer then we jammed the cooling fan and dumped handfulls of sand where the oil cap was supposed to be... We put a brick on the gas peddle and stood back a fair distance... you could hear the car howling in pain! It almost made me cry. The engine ran for 20 minutes that way gradually getting slower and slower, but it just wouldn't die. I knew what had to be done, I walked up and turned off the key... It never started again. We walk back to his car, go buy a gas jerry fill it up, and return. I said a little prayer to the car gods and POOF!

I remind my new car of that little point in my history from time to time, threatening it with the same fate if it ever screws me over.
