  • how good are the stock coil packs

How good are the stock coils on these LQ1's, are they good enough for some performance mods or should they be upgraded? Also what kind of plug/wire setup does everyone recommend?

they're good enough to not have to get the msd/accel ones.

AC delco or AC delco rapidfire plugs are the only way to go with the GM DIS ignition. it EATS bosch and bosch platinum plugs for lunch.

Well I figured the bosch's sucked because 3800's eat them for lunch, our igniton systems are too hot for those things. I saw that accel, msd and summit has coils for our engines, just wanna get some "real time" opinions on the subject.

You will find hits and misses with any brand. All brands have defects out of the box it is like a lottery.

Don't bother is MSD on these engines the Stock DIS is more than capable unless the engine is modded heavy like SC or turbos and major internal upgrades.

Stock motor with high dollar aftermarket plug wires super duper spark plugs is like throwing money away, however you may get a tad of MPG no real time HP gains.

lets put it this way... our LQ1 coil packs are the same as the ones in the 3800 series engine and all the people runing in the 9sec 1/4 are using factory coils! and after all the probs some people have with aftermarket coils failing! i'll stick with GM/ACdelco coils.... if you want some MSD coils i have a used set off my GTP im thinking of selling for $80 if your interested. if you are PM me

I would go with magnecor wires. They cost more but last forever.

I was told GM has the highest output coils, somewhere around 80,000 Volts where as dodge and ford put out around 60,000 volts.

Seems like GM is on top of something for once.
