  • 2002 3.5L conversion?

    hey,
looking for any info on using a 2002 3.5L dohc intrigue engine in a 91 lumina z34. My biggest concern would be keeping the system obd 1. would i be able to use the intake and throttle body off the new engine? any info on the 3.5 would be appreciated.

Not worth trying to run it on obd1. You would be best off keeping the pcm, harness that it comes with.

    96 Z34 3.4 SC DOHC Getrag, 284 5sd manual transmission, stage 3spec clutch, 97 engine, 97 pcm, S3 intercooler 1 of 1 Roots SC LQ1 in the world 8.5 psi.

The only engine billed as a DOHC 3.5 liter that GM puts in cars was made by Honda. It also appeared around 2004-2005 IIRC, so I think you'd be getting into all sorts of trouble if you try to shoehorn that into a normal GM vehicle. I highly recommend going with the 3.6 DOHC high-feature engine if you want a modern GM DOHC engine. You can buy a crate version that puts out a vicious 305 hp at the flywheel. I'm not sure it has the proper bolt pattern for a FWD transmission in that trim, but you might also be able to dig up a block with the proper pattern and switch all the goodies over. Or just be satisfied with 'only' 260-275ish hp.

That's not true... You're forgetting the LX5 3.5L DOHC "Premium V6" engine that was (as the OP mentioned) in the Olds Intrigue--called the Shortstar by most people as it was based off the Northstar engine. Only produced for a few years (99-02) despite GM spending a lot of money developing it. Was a really nice engine, however GM later moved to the LY7 "High Feature" 3.6L V6, as you described.

Ugh, that's what I get for letting myself touch the computer when I haven't had sleep in 24+ hours. Thanks for the correction.

Well, that's a 90* v6 if I'm not mistaken (again), based on the 4.6 liter Northstar v8. I know that it has been successfully transplanted into a Fiero, but from what I gather, W-bodies don't have as much spare room up front as the Fiero has out back. It might be a reeeaaally tight fit.

It will bolt up to your transmission. Getting it to run right with a manual, however, is another matter altogether. You might learn more from searching the fiero.nl technical forum for information about 3.5 DOHC/Shortstar. The only guy I recall having swapped it in is "Rickaddady" or something like that.

May I ask why you are interested in using the Shortstar instead of swapping in another LQ1? More power to you if that's what you want to do, but I can't see that there would be much of an advantage in using the Shortstar. You might gain a few horsepower and have a bit less maintenance work over the years, but in exchange for lots of headache. Like I said, though, more power to you if it's what you want to do.

Where did you see that Engine?
I don't see it on the GMPP site.

well im mainly interested in using that engine because if im not mistaken it a chain driven engine not belt driven. and i figure it would be a really cool swap to put some new technology in an older car. i dont have my heart set on it im just tring to get as muich info on it as i can.

                    It won't fit.

The 3.6 is put in the Lacrosse, Rendevous, CTS and a few other GM vehicles....ohh and the G6 GTP.

I have my suspicions that they're selling RWD bolt pattern 3.6's, though. Which would be sad. And of course, the headers they have on it are probably useless for a non-custom application. Nevertheless, really cool.

You will have to transfer a complete harness for the engine from a Olds which includes the ECM for that year or varient year.

                        Steet & performance.

GM can program and flash the ECM for manual anticipation and roll off.

My wife will not give her LX5 up, mabey if you bought her a new car she'd give it to ya.

I'm putting in a ly7 v6 in a sand rail and trying to decide whether or not use the stock ecm and air mass sensor or run a haltec. If I run the stock stuff where do you find wiring diagrams for the pin locations?

Spend $20 and get an AllData account for the vehicle you got the engine from. It will have all the diagrams you will need. And when you are done, download the images, send them over and we'll put them up on the site.
