  • What is the top power for the DOHC?

I am new here. This is a great forum for this motor. I'm trying to learn about it as I have a 96 crate motor I am planning to do a swap with.
I am just curious, how much potential this motor has? I read in another post that it is pretty easy to get 275 na hp with some exhaust, and timing changes, and porting.
I intend to turbo this motor in time, also. I would just like to hear what kind of numbers people are getting out of these motors.
    Thanks, and great forum.

I dont know how many of us have dynoed, i know I haven't:P The 96 engine has the better intake manifolds for top end, which in a fiero is fine cause you wont have to deal with the worse low end of the 96 engine.

With a turbo, you can get a ton of power, over 400-500 hp if you wanted to work on the bottom end some.

Yeah, not many 85 mustang GT owners are interested in the LQ1:P

Ok. I guess that makes sense. Where is the best place for porting the 96 heads? And what does it usually run cost wise? I have seen someone offering porting on ebay starting at like $200 I think, but I wouldn't want just anybody to do it. I want to make sure it is done right, when I do it.

I could do it. I don't know any companies that list the 96 heads, nor anyone that has done any sort of testing on them. All my experience is with the 91-95 heads as well, but the intake side is the same and I have some ideas for the exhaust. The CC isn't bad at all stock IMO, just a little bit of work to do there.

Ive never seen anyone offering to port the DOHC heads for 200 though. It takes too long to do these heads to only charge 200 though. Any place that I have seen selling DOHC heads charge 1000+.

WOW! Sounds like a lot of work. It must be worth it though. How hard is it to do, other than the time? I do have a good dremmel. Can it be done with that?

I wouldn't use a dremel, since it would take insanely longer to do it that way.

If you have never done head work, I would not start on a set you want to use. It takes a while to learn how to do what you want to do without getting stuck with doing something you didnt wanna do.

You can buy good electric 1/4" chuck die grinders, variable speed may be an issue though. I found it to be a nessesity, especially with the small bowls and the soft aluminum. Don't get burrs for non-ferrous metals just get ferrous carbide burrs, you won't be removing that much material. The non-ferrous burrs have a better chance of jumping around and really fucking things up.
