  • "Putt Putt" sound coming from muffler

    Guys,

Recently changed the Timing belt and the components. (used the right tools and loosened the cam bolts)

Got the car together, but I get a "putt putt" sound coming from the muffler...the engine shakes a little also.

I did replace all gaskets, and the plugs......

Any ideas ? Could the timing be off again ?

Also when I am in park and I lower the windows, the car lights dim, and the RPM's go down.....I did replace the serpentine belt.......but dont know whats wrong...got the battery on the charger right now..

thanks to all..and thank god a for a site like this....

That is exactly where I am at with my Z34. Info I have gotten is. it has to be a timing issue. Hope you can get some help.

Damn..not again...man this will be the 3rd time...I just dont know how it can be the timing....did it like the site says...maybe I dont put enough tension on the belt....

that square part on the tensioner, where you connect the socket to, where is that supposed to be ?

do you still drive the car ?

I wish I had it solved to help you but we are in the same boat at the moment. Car does drive OK, very rough idle, not the awesome power it used to have.

so I changed the plugs again and put new wires in.

Same crap....although the putt putt has gone down alot.

The car idles rough but drives good.....so I guess only loosening the front cam gears did not work for me.

If its the timing, I think I can do it again in 2hrs....I removed the timing cover and rotated the engine and all of MY marks still line up....so not sure..

I know that the hold downs did bend a little....about 4 mm....so maybe thats the problem...the cams are not 100% flat...

now I have to find a cam gear removal tool... will let you know how it turns out...

sunny i have a similar problem coming form my 93 z, my valve cover gaskets dried up and had to take the entire intake off, after i put her back together she ran just as bad, she hesitates, sputters etc. so i put a egr valve on, good wires and plugs, air and fuel filter, hoses and gaskets and still no luck, she runs 95% better not quite there yet, my timing belt looks very good so iam not going to attempt that but iam taking it too a dealer this weekend to put her on a machine to look at the motor, ill let ya know what happens.

Eric, did you find out what it is ? I just redid the damn timing, and I am still at the same point, though the putt putt and rough idle is about 20% better than before...

Wondering if I could have messed up the o2 sensor, as the connector is very tight..
