  • Sorry for another T-Belt ?

    All,

What parts are people using for T-belts ?

I see rockauto has a set of Belt, tensioner and 2 idlers made by Gates for $134...is that any good ?

They also have a Dayco tensioner, idler set for $99 but no belt.

ACdelco set with belt for $134

If its easier to tell me what to avoid pls do..

Also, I read some posts that say "preload" the Timing belt with tension...what does that mean ? I thought I slap it on and then adjust tension.....

Sorry for being a ReTarD on the T-Belt questions...

There are only two companies besides GM making the timing parts for these engines, Gates and Dayco. Thats it. Now pieces made by these companies sell under different names. Like Napa brand timing belts. These are made by Gates. I've used the Gates stuff, but thats just because I worked at Napa. Dayco should be OK too.
As for Preloding the belt, to properly time this engine you need to lock all the cams straight up and remove the cam gears from the cams. Then you install the belt, install the tensioner and lock the left bank cam gears, remove lock down tool from left bank, spin engine over to tension belt then repeat for the right side. Make sure that when one the flats of one bank of cams are pointed up, the other bank is pointing down. Spin engine over again to seat belt. The problem is this belt is quite long and tension is only applied to one small section of the belt.
If it\'s fun, it\'s probably illegal and if it\'s illegal I\'m probably doing it.

so besides Rockauto.com where else can I find the parts needed for a timing belt ?

I am looking for all the parts and the bolts. rockauto said they dont have the bolts.

      Thanks,

Any parts store should have these timing component kits. The Napa kit had bolts for the idler pulleys but not for the tensioner pulley. I was told by the manager at O'reillys Auto Parts that they offer a timing belt tensioner for these engines, but I never ordered one so I don't know for sure.
