  • I just cant figure out what is wrong!!

    ok, i have a 1992 gtp. when the car is warm, it will just die. it will die when i am at a stop sign or a stop light, or if i take a turn in neutral (its a 5 spd). It also back fires sometimes. Before it dies, it feels like it isnt getting enough gas. I took it to a shop and they said that the fuel pump was fine, the fuel filter, the fuel pressure regulator, and the air filter are new. The car is getting proper compression and spark. I can't figure out what is wrong with it. I dont have a lot of money to just start replacing parts, and the shop was useless so any advise is greatly appreciated. I thought that it may be the fuel injectors. Fuel injectors are expensive so if someone could tell me how to check them i would appreciate it. thanks in advance for all the help.

    does it fire back up? because this is normal for 5 speed cars. the only was to fix it is buy new updated part number gm injectors or get a chip off ben and have him raise the idle a little, since i got the chip off him the car doesnt stall.

      test the injectors with an ohmeter. When the injectors are cold resistance should be somewhere in the high 12's. The thing to look for is an oddball reading. If 5 injectors are real close together and 1 injector is way out theres your problem. How about your Idle Air Control motor? I'm not sure how to check it but it would cause a problem like this. Is your service engine soon light on?

        the car will fire back up but very not very easily. I actually raised the idle myself to about 2k and that stopped it from stalling when coming to a stop but if i take a turn out of gear it will still stall. i have replaced a bunch of parts and i am now thinking that it is either the IAC valve or the egr valve.

          i had a shop test all the injectors, fuel pump, and fuel pressure so that should all be good. i have the car in storage right now but i am going to test the IAC as you suggested. That seems like the most logical next step.

            the injectors will test fine, there is just an updated number for the car, it is a bulletin from gm, "phantom stalling" they call it. and raising the idle from the screw is not the proper way to do it.

              Just update them, I did on my GTP getrag and it worked.

                my guse would of been fuel pressure reg but I guess not.

                96 Z34 3.4 SC DOHC Getrag, 284 5sd manual transmission, stage 3spec clutch, 97 engine, 97 pcm, S3 intercooler 1 of 1 Roots SC LQ1 in the world 8.5 psi.

                  I fuel regulator has an expected life of 120k plus miles.

                  These years had an issue with phantom stalling for some reason alot of cars were effected and the only cure was update the injectors.

                  most regulators flow in almost open to allow the car to limp home yes. However the exhaust is gassy and smells rich, and on a cold start it puffs black smoke and is very hard to start. May act as if it starving for gas when actually it is over rich. Car will run better when hot.

                  I think it had alot to do with ethanol and early models.

                  Also the 5 speed ECM has a anticipation setup in the program. You may want to check the clutch release and press switches under the dash.

                  I can hardly remember... Check the brake system, there is a bulb thingy that requres a certain amount of pressurized nitrogen if the pressure is to low it can cause funny things.
