  • Starter fails at times

    All,

I have a 95 3.4L DOHC cutlass and somtimes it does not start. When this happens it does not turn over or anything, I can turn lights on and power is there.

Funny thing is that if I turn the key 5 -6 times over and over the car starts up...then for a month or 2 it will be fine, and oneday stop again.......

Do you think its the starter ? If so would it fail in this way...working fine for a month, then stop one day till I turn the key 5 times...then work fine again for a while.....

    thanks....

    Two possibilities;

    1) Neutral safety switch is funky

    2) Starter solenoid is binding.

Can you use a multimeter with any great efficiency?

                  Hey sunny_8,

Do you have a test light?
IF you have no power at the starter solenoid
( the small wire going to the starter, It should be PURPLE)
then that means its a very good chance it is the ignition switch.

If you have any questions let me know.

                  Regards,

Thanks David, I will check it out tonight.....will go buy a light test...

I was able to get the car to start....I removed the OBD Key.....and put it back in...and she started right up......still need to figure out what is going on with the starter.

So I just check for power at the starter solonid without turning the ignition ?

                    thanks !

I am having the exact same issue with my 94.

Where is the neutral safety switch?

                      This is very frustrating.

Just started happening after getting it out of storage. I know it's not the battery, I have a brand new Die Hard Gold in last week.

I had a similiar situation, but I had to replace the power wire from the battery. Also might check good battery ground.

I have had the same issue with my 94 for quite some time.

Finally I got hold of a test light when the vehicle wasn't starting.

It was definately a bad starter. Replaced it.

I've been driving for a long time and I've had starters go before but they never acted like this one. That's why I didn't think it was the starter.

I had a similar problem. Turned out the charging post connection was bad. It was embarrasing too. I was bragging on my car to a friend, and when I tried to start it....clic...clic...clic.

Could just be a dead spot in the motor. Next time it doesn't start hit it with a hammer or put the car in gear and push it a foot then try again. If it starts after doing that then its a dead spot on the commutator..
