With a 92 motor, you need a cam gear puller to get the lock rings out. I could have sworn I showed this in the picture walkthrough.

yes but it dosnt really explain it well. so all i need as far as tools is a cam gear puller and i can make a hold down tool. where would i get a cam gear puller? in the writeup it also shows a cam gear holder, do i need one of those too? thanks.

Yes you need something to hold the cam gear in place and it can't be the hold down tool or you will strip the threads that it bolts down to. Kent moore makes the tools and is part of the tool kit they make. You can buy the puller seperate but its not cheap. I don't know the name of the site that has it but a google search for 3.4 DOHC timing tool should find it. Ebay does now and then as well.

ok so the gear puller will take the cam gears off without removing the rear cam carrier correct? thanks a bunch.

          EDIT - found tool set

so this is all i need?

and just FWIW, you may want to mension this in the timing walkthrough because i was clueless to all of these tools except the hold down tool until talking to you, then again i may just be retarted. thanks.

You still can't get the rear exhaust cam off without removing the carrier. The tool kits on ebay are a lot less but you gotta watch for them.

The hold downs are 100 on there I think, so id buy the puller, make your own hold down, and rig something to hold the gear in place. Some people have used vice grips to hold the cam gears in place.

so how do the lock rings come off? do they just come off when you use the cam gear puller? soand would you just loosten the three other ones, put the rear exh. cam in place then move the other ones accordingly right?
