  • Alternator Not Charging after Timing Belt Replacement

The timing belt broke in my 1995 Cutlass Supreme (3.4 L DOHC) with 130,000 miles. Thanks to help from this site, I got the new timing belt installed and the engine running again. I took the car out for a test drive, and everything was working well until I noticed the headlights getting dim.

I got the car home and found that I was only at 11 V or so at the battery with the car running. I should be seeing 13 V to 14 V. I didn't do anything to the alternator during the timing belt repair except remove and install the drive belt. It does appear to be slipping or anything. So, I was wondering if anyone else expreince any charging issues after a timing belt replacement.

It probably is my luck that I get to do 2 of the wort repairs in a row on this vehicle.

I can do the alternator in 45 minutes, so it's not that hard.

Grab a DMM and see what the alternator output is. If there is none, then you know its bad.

Be sure to check your connections too. It could be as simple as something came disconnected and you did see it.

Thanks for the info. Everything I have read seems to make the alternator a major job on a FWD vehicle with the 3.4 L DOHC engine. Whats your shortcut?

Disconnect battery, take off accessory belt, jack of passenger side and put a jack stand underneath, take off wheel and tire, undo outer tie rod nut and swing outer tie rod to the side, take off CV shield, place jackstand under passenger side subframe, undo passenger side subframe bolts, lower subframe, undo alternator mounting bolts, disconnect electrical connections, then manuever the alternator out.

Thanks for the quick summary, definitely makes it sound easier and faster than what I have read until this point.

It's not hard at all. I think the hardest part may be manuevering the alternator out. I'm pretty sure you have to turn it so the pulley is facing inwards toward the engine, and twist it around and it will just slide right out. Been a while, since I finally have a rebuilt alternator that kicks ass finally.
