  • lifters size

Are the exhaust and intake lifters the same size ?I took the cam carrier off and and some of the lifters came out. Im going to re seal the motor it started with oil on the timming belt then i found the oil on the spark plugs. You can see the oil down the spark plug tube laeking half way down so i know it is not the valve cover .Also the intermediate shaft seal is leaking how do you get the gear off? What kind of puller do you use?

Any help would be great, Thanks Don

Same lifters for intake and exhaust. You need a self tapping puller to get the timing belt gear drive off. Its a special tool from OTC/Kent Moore. Imnot aware of any other way to get it off though a modified gear puller might do it as well.

      Ben-

I got the fel-pro top gasket kit like you recommended. Bought new head bolts and the oil pump drive o-ring. Anyhow: 21 of 24 lifters seem solid - that is they do not actuate. The remaining 3 lifters do. Can you shed light on this.

I found the timing belt drive gear comes off fairly easy with mild application of force and a bit of patience.

I used a small prybar and braced it on the timing cover bolts, and tapped gently for about 5 minutes, alternating sides... The thing popped right off.

I checked it afterwards to make sure I didn't bend it. The key is to be gentle but persistant.

There is a checkball inside the lifter and a spring. When the lifter isn't full of oil, you can press in on the lifter. If you didn't have any audible ticking, then I wouldn't worry about the lifters. New, they are all solid by hand pressure though that is the ones I sell. The GM lifters you can press down by hand without much effort.

Find the closest size hole tap to the holes in that gear. Tap three holes in the gear in a triangle pattern. I think the holes are 10mm but there is also an SAE size that works, I think I used 3/8" or 7/16". Then you can use a harmonic balancer or steering wheel puller by screwing the bolts through the puller into the gear.
