  • Wheel Bearing Hubs

Ok, i am hearing a dull moaning like sound at high speeds (45+ mph) and am wondering if this is the wheel hubs.

I have suspected that one might have never been replaced after an accident. Wondering if anyone else has heard or felt this.

Anyone know if you have to get an alignment after you replace the back or front ones?

    RE: Wheel Bearing Hubs

not sure the signs of a failing hub exactly, when my hub went, it started as a slight vibration almost like a warped rotor, then my rotors went cause of it.
but the hubs arent that hard to change. i have pics and a writeup on it. it is on pg6 of my cardomain. i didnt need an alignment on the front. and havent tried the back.

      RE: Wheel Bearing Hubs

You have to replace the whole knukle on the rear only if you want a clean straight repair.

The hubs will either grind, hum or woble.

yeah, i know it is one big piece, no replaceable parts.. but humming is a goood word to use.. thanks.

I think when the car was hit in the back they left the old ones on or replaced them with used ones

The rear is replaced by a hub assembly, but if you want a good straight repair then a new knukle should be used or at least sand blast the old one.

did anyone see what GM wanted for the whole knuckle? good grief! $534

They put a new knuckle on a few years ago (my brother was the first owner) when it was in an accident.. but i swear they put the old hub on and i am thinking it is toast, and maybe the front two also

Rear spindles, again come apart from the hub/bearing. Front spindles strut assemblies are expensive and is the same as the rear the hub/bearing comes apart from the spindle.

You confuzzed I ment spindles. Spindles, Knuckles same thing.

lol, actually, the fronts were much cheaper.. $90 compared to $165. But then they build the stupid ABS sender into the rear one.

The good news was that it wasn't the wheel bearing. The rebuilt caliper I bought a few years ago screwed up and wore one side of the brake pad badly. I seemed to still move on its pivots.. but it was replaced, just cost me a set of rear brake pads and about 2 extra days (the new one didn't come with a inner pad holder and they closed on christmas eve before I could retrieve my old one).

I was thinking with a new mac cart. pressed with a used spring and ready to go.

Since I don't have the equipment to compress a strut assy, I have had Sears assemble front strut assemblies for me.

Hopefully you caught it in time before it did anymore damage.

I caught it just in time.. almost had worn through the pad.. still makes a bit of the noise, going to use my new handy dandy mityvac brake bleeder and re-bleed all of the lines and recheck them in a week or so

Autozone sells the whole caliper, spring already on, lifetime warranty for only 30 bucks with a 52 dollar core. just strange one went bad in 2 years.
