  • Shop "TIMING CHAIN needs replaced"

The timing belt on my 95 Monte Z34 broke. Didn't have any valve damage thank goodness. I came here and found the part numbers for gmpartsdirect.com and saved myself about $250.
Now the shop is saying the Timing Chain is running very noisy and that I need:

    Timing Chain
    Chain Tensioner
    2 Chain Gears
    Gasket

    1. I've never heard of anyone needing these replaced. What do you guys think?
    2. Anyone have the part numbers for these things or know where I can go to get em? I don't trust gmpartsdirects catalog

    Thanks

He does have one, and so do you.

You should take a look at it yourself, but if the mech has it now...

Ask if the mechanic has actually looked at it and saw that there is no play in the gears and the chain looks fine,

You probably just needs the tensioner, but if it iwas loose a long time I could see replacing all the components.

I forgot the part # but easy to look up and buy at rockauto.com (don't forget the discount)

And yes you will need the timing chain cover gasket.

Don't forget the dummy camshaft seal and front crankshaft seal as well.

Its possible but it is not the most common part to go bad. How many miles do you have? The chain is sold in a set with the gears so that is no problem. We have a tensioner though which makes it a bit nicer than the pushrod motor setups without it. If the shop has it, you probably are at their mercy unless they are willing to demonstrate the slack by turning the crank gear and showing you the amount of movement before there is any tension against it.
