I got my engine in and tried to get it started. I cannot get it fired. I am getting some kind of spark because I am getting smoke out of the exhaust. While the engine is turning over it FEELS like it wants to fire but does nothing. I figured maybe the timing was off so I checked that. All was well. I am at my wits end. The only other thing I can think of is MAYBE I put the cams in the wrong spots (swapped int and exh). Is there a way I can look and see without pulling the carriers out? Any info on cams OR why I cannot get this pig started will be appreciated! THANX

I couldn't see any obvious markings on the cams so I had a buddy put his hand over the respective intake port and check for a suction. It was there. For the sake of my own dignity I won't say what was wrong but it was REALLY stupid. All is well now though. Thanx for reply.

OK... DOnt let the laughs kill you. I had checked and recheck mechanical timing over and over and all seemed well. I decided to see if for some dumb reason nr1 piston wasn't at TDC when the mark on the timing chain cover said it was. So I did the old screwdriver in the sparkplug hole trick and manually turned the engine over.... Holy crap!! The screwdriver is being pushed UP!! Then it dawned on me. Like a dumbass I was thinking nr1 was on the passenger side FRONT BANK when it is in fact on the REAR BANK! I had the sparkplug wires done with 1, 3, & 5 in front and 2, 4, & 6 in the rear.
The morale of the story is..... Don't be a dumbass.
This does bring up a good question so I wont start a new post for it. Which way is correct for spark plug wiring on the ign modules in a 95 Monte Carlo?
1) 1/4, 6/3, 2/5 (With wire connections away reading left to right)
2) 1/4, 3/6, 2/5
Option 1 is in my Haynes books and in the 91 Lumina shop manual. It is also on my spare set of coils from a 91 Lumina.
Option 2 is in the vehicle emissions label under the hood.
I have driven the car with the coils both ways and I can't notice any difference in performance. Can any verify which is correct? Thanx
