  • engine break in and oil pressure

    New motor rebuild.

    I was wondering;

    When I first start up the oil light is on, I guess because the oil pressure has not built up. How long should it take? 10 seconds...two minutes?

    How can I check to see that the oil is moving, I got a new oil pump and hope it is not defective.

    I saw a little oil on the cams after running for the first time maybe 45 seconds.

    Any other engine break in tricks or do's/dont's?

    Who has put an actual oil pressure gauge on their engine, what is the best way to go?

    Thanks

    RE: engine break in and oil pressure

    I think the BEST way is to install a aftermarket trans/oil cooler with a filter relocator. Then use the pressure sender orfice on the head for an electric oil pressure guage.

      you should have oil pressure right after start up 5 seconds is way to long. if you have no oil pressure that means that the oil pump is not pumping and your engine is starving for oil

        Well, I need to know if my motor is even pushing any oil so I will just leave off the oil cap and wait for the oil to appear, unless you have a better idea.

          get an oil psi gauge. 10 bucks. dissconect the oil pressure switch and plug the gauge in there. this is unless you have a oil gauge in the car and it works.
