  • Better from the top or the bottom?

How ya doing? This will be my first post ever here as I just stumbled across this sight while looking for info on My 95 Monte Carlo Z34 3.4L and I think the 4t60e auto . First off its got 110000 on it, no reverse and wont shift out of 1st and makes a wierd plunking noise from near the torque conv.(Is there a good noise from that area?) So looks like Im pulling the trans unless someone might know something I dont cause I sure as hell dont know everything. ( I will post the tranny issue somewhere else )Anyway my main question is instead dropping the trans out the bottom like my haynes manual says and dealing with the suspension steering and sub frame issues I wonder if it would be worth the effort to just pull the motor/transaxle from the top in one peice? Looks like the anti lock brake system might be an issue. Like to here from any one who has been there done that. With this many miles having the motor out would be cool any way for things like altenator timing belt stuff. I have changed tranaxles 3 times on other vehicles from the bottom but not on the W body.

I pulled my engine and manual trans out the top. You will have to remove the brake resevoir from the brake booster in order to pull it out the top. You gotta pull the engine with it out the top cause there is no room to seperate them in the engine bay.

Looks like its going to be from the top anyway. Thanks for the replies. I thinkI will take advantage of the engine on the stand and do some of the "high maintenance" these things require like timing belt altenator and o ring. I ain't bitchin cause I REALLY like this engine.Anybody else got anything to add to the list while all the good parts are out?

If you have the tool that bolts to the engine and supports it from the top of the car it is easier to drop the sub frame out the bottom and remove the trans from the bottom. of course this is also assuming you have access to a lift.

I wouldn't trust that site link you gave-it seems pretty odd. They list 91 and up 3.4L, however the different years changed a lot, and there is a difference in pistons between 5-speeds, autos, and newer years. Does that include pistons? I didn't bother looking. If so, I would definately go somewhere else.

Damn dude, I payed $179.00 for a complete engine gasket kit, here in Edmonton and it was felpro.

One thing I have learned is canadian tire is not the place to buy parts, oil and shit yes, but not parts.

AutoZone here says 119.99 for a top end Felpro Set w/o head bolts
Napa says 189 w/o head bolts. Anyone know what a set of them run?

Gaskets w/o stem seals, rear seal, oil pump, rings, rod bearings, main bearings, and timing
