  • Power Steering line Replacment?

ok i dont know why i want to fix it but.....

The line that goes from the top of the power steering pump to the rack has HOLES in the rubber hose part loses all fluid with in a couple miles...

IT looks easy enough to replace it but once i try to get in there i cant even get my wrench in there to undo the nut that holds the line in.....

Is there any tricks or what is the best way besides spending 250 buxs plus cost of line to get this replaced.

PS...im pretty sure this has to be the return line, but people say it is the supply....again it is the line that goes from the TOP of the pump then turns to rubber hose going down the fire wall then back to line going into the rack.

MAke it even worse i know when i get it back i will miss the gas milage in my truck wich gets 17 mpg i cant go more than 230 miles on a full tank and 98% all highway miles. yet the truck gets 330+ on a tank and has a 22 gal tank

maybe if you could rock the motor forward. i think to do plugs in somepuushrod motors your supposed to undo the dogbones and rock the motor forward with a come-a-long to give you better acceses, it might be something to look into.

If you have to use a wrench to take the line loose from the pump. Its your high pressure line(also known as supply line).

(Keep in mind I have an 97 DOHC) I changed mine when I had my upper intake plenum and throttle body off. Made it a hell of allot easier. (auto trans) Still a pain in the @ss. Uh ya I also pulled exhaust cross over tube to give me enough room to swing a line wrench. You can give yourself an extra 1 1/2 of room if you take dogbone mount out and use short chain. rock motor forward and put bolts thru chain to hold. If you need to pull intake for any reason. Do it all at one time. IMO

I've also heard of guys dropping the back of the cradle down a couple inches. You have to be careful and not pull the steering slip yoke apart on the end of the steering column.
