  • EGR Idle Question

Tried to search may have found some things to confirm my suspicions but I'm not completely sure.

I've been using Ben's chip, EGR valve off, for emissions I switched back to the stock one. Since then my idle has been very low, 500 rpms, and if I let it idle that low it seems to stink like burning plastic almost.

I've also noticed when under hard acceleration the engine bogs after a shift.

The only thing I can think of really, is besides the chip performance changes that the EGR valve is probably full of carbon buildup from being off for a year.

I was thinking about removing and cleaning it and getting a new gasket. Any other opinions on my problem?

EDIT: Also I know I read some where but can't find article or topic. What is a good vacuum line to use for seafoam?

      RE: EGR Idle Question

      Update: Failed emmissions
      Test Actual (allowed)
      25mph test
      HCppm 35 (114)
      CO% .02 (.63)
      NOxppm 771 (796)
      RPM 1791 (2500)
      CO+CO2% 14.4 (6.0 min)
      15 mph test
      HCppm 23 (117)
      CO% .01 (.63)
      NOxppm 1211 (879)
      RPM 1820 (2500)
      CO+CO2% 14.4 (6.0 min)

During the test I noticed smoke coming from the EGR valve, I replaced it and went back for a second test.

      Test Actual (allowed)
      25mph test
      HCppm 32 (114)
      CO% .02 (.63)
      NOxppm 891 (796)
      RPM 1800 (2500)
      CO+CO2% 14.5 (6.0 min)
      15 mph test
      HCppm 40 (117)
      CO% .03 (.63)
      NOxppm 1325 (879)
      RPM 1825 (2500)
      CO+CO2% 14.5 (6.0 min)

Smoke was coming from around the EGR valve and it seemed to be coming from below it. Hard to tell.

      Ideas?

Your NOx are real high which leads me to believe there is an EGR problem. Remove your EGR valve and start youo engine. Do you hear load exhaust? Will it idle? Do you hear vacuum noise?
What performance mods have been done?

Engine mods are just Ben's chip and a simple intake.
Stock chip is in now, with a brand new EGR valve.
Could the exhaust leaking cause the numbers to get worse? And could using seafoam had made it worse?

          Thanks

What temp t-stat you running? No experiance with seafoam. Can't answer that one.

I'm left the one for the chip in, 160 i think. Stock is... 195? Could that change my fuel mix some how?

Yes the cat needs a 195 to make it work. It wont get hot enough to work with a 160. A 160 t-stat can cause all kinds of emissions and drivebility problems with a stock chip.

I stand corrected it's 180* Will that still mess up my emissions?

Have you done the thing i suggested earlier with egr off? Changed t-stat to 195*? It could be a possibility of allot of different things. There is steps to diagnosing the problem.

I have changed the stat. The problem is that I have to pay each time I get emissions done and I have no way of knowing if I will pass until I go and get it done.

So stat changed, I don't know if it still leaks exhaust, I don't have equipment to drive 15mph with a 75lb load to see if it does. I just want to make sure I fix it before i pay to have it done again.
