  • Question about cam cogs

I just had a question about the differences in the cam cog assemblies for the 93 and older and 94 and newer engines.

Looking at the picture of the cog/taper seat assembly shown in this thread.. http://www.60degreev6.com/index.php?...ewtopic&t=6429 it appears that one COULD replace the bastard cog/lock ring assembly on the 93 and older engines with the newer taper lock assembly from the 94+ engines.

Has anyone tried to do so? Does anyone have the dimensions of the cog end of both style camshafts to compare? IF the dimensions are identical, swapping the lock rings for the taper seats should be possible and make changing the timing belt a ton easier.

    Just a thought.

theres A pic of cams in that thread. Yes they are interchangble. But you have to change all of them. Including the drive cog and t-belt. . The teeth on the cogs are shaped differant.

91-95 are all the same minus the lockring, so you could use the 94-95 cam cogs on a 91-93 and make your life easier. Only the 96-97 have different cam cogs with more teeth (and rounded) need the different belt and the drive gear to match.

Thanks!! I ran across what is possibly a 94-95 in the boneyard a couple days ago. someone had already stripped the intake off. I just might go back and yank the cam cogs for my 93 and make my next belt change a ton easier.

Make sure you get the drive cog also. You'll have a total of 5 cogs.

The drive cog on the 94-95 is exactly the same as 91-93... you don't need to get it. Only 96-97 is different

OOOPS! I was thinking 96-97. Should have read a little closer.

My 92 has the newer non lockring style cogs on it, but not the rounded 96/7 style. It does make life alot easier, especially on the rear exhaust cam. I have had the car 2 years now (hard to imagine, but it's true) and have yet to have a problem with them.

slightly off topic - I've been real busy wrapping up my 3.4dohc turbo install - but the next project once that is running good is the adjustable cam cogs - set the timing once the normal way - then after that it'll only require removing the plastic cover to change the cam timing.. hope to have a prototype by october leaving enough time to get a production run by Christmas.
