95 Montecarlo Z34 ---> Yesterday I was driving home on I-81 doing about 70 when my radio volume jumped and my rpms jumped up over 3000, it drove fine the last 15 miles or so. Today it ran fine to work (about 23 miles). About 3-4 miles into the drive home, doing about 40, the radio volume jumped (both times the volume jumped just for a second) and the speedo and tach were dead then I noticed the engine was shut down. I pulled off of the road and restarted, drove about a hundred yards or so to a stop sign, when I pulled out it died again. I restarted it and drove it on back roads home with no problems whatsoever. I immediately thought it was the alt. because when I changed the timing belt a couple of weeks ago it made a slight squeal when I spun it. Also when I was cleaning the aluminum where the timing belt pulleys bolt into I used brake cleaner and realized too late that some had run into the alt. which can't be good for it, then with all of the sensors and coil packs I'm not sure what it could be. I also put a Hypertech chip in to make it run cooler (180) about a month or so ago, I'm hoping I didn't get a pos chip. I'll check it out tom. after work, until then if anyone has any ideas on what it might be they'd be much appreciated. Thanks. Dan.
