  • Sad day.....

Well, I gotta give her up (92 Z34).
Been a pretty good 3 years with her.

I have another E-test due, ($450 at least).
And today I "think my timing belt went bye bye)

    Started the car, started fine.
Noticed a belt squeel. (Or at least thats what it sounded like)
Drove about 50 feet, pulled over to check it out.
Saw smoke coming from in between the rear TB cover and the plenum.
    Smelled like burnt rubber.

Didn't have my tools with me so I could not take the covers off and check the teeth.

Started it up again, noticed the engine running rough, (timing now out).

Ah shit, time to buy a 500 dollar junker and work on her when I can.

    then sell it.

It almost my birthday too. Shit.

    RE: Sad day.....

i doubt its your timing belt, they dont squeal and when they go your car doesnt run and cranking it over sounds wierd. sorry to hear about it though. my brothers timing belt broke on his bday 3 years ago , not a good day.

actually its probably your alternator, because when they go and your battery loses some juice the car runs like crap.

Yeah, that sounds about right, I've never heard a belt squel coming from a t-belt. Your alt. coulda siezed thus causing the accessories belts to slip on it and squeel.

          Update

Yep, It was the timing belt.

The smoke I saw was the belt rubbing agaisnt the housing.
          Tore it to shreds.

It didn't break, but another 5 miles and it would have.
Checked my cams and the flats are way out of whack.
So the timing definatly is out.

So, Changed the alt, a new tie rods, now I have to do the TB.
          What fun..

          Test,

Yeah, thats pretty messed up. Sure you don't want to spend the 500 to fix that back up vs buying another car to get around?

                  sappyse107,

I am trying my best to get her back.....
Just can't find the cam flats or the hold down tools round here....

I know grandprixgtp_91 lives here in Windsor, hoping he can give me some leads as to how to get these tools in Windsor...

I have it torn down as much as I can, Just looking for tools now.

I don't have a Credit card so online ordering is out. (damn)

                  Hopefully she'll rise again soon.

I've already promised her a ring and a nice honeymoon if she cooperates...lol

I thought about that as well. But then i thought of this:

What happens if the actuator fails and the belt starts wobbling all over?
Instead of the plastic idlers failing and stopping the car, it keeps going because steel idlers won't fail, engine damage may occur instead over time.

Theres got be a reason besides being "Cheap" they made these parts to fail like they do.

                      Test,

Yeah the idlers aren't going to save it if the tensioner fails (which is probably what happened here). Since you're gonna replace the idlers anyway for a thorough timing belt job there's no point in having expensive steel pulleys when a plastic one works just fine.
