  • timing belt broke

heya all..well..my damn timing belt broke, well actually, didnt broke, but lost all the "teeth"so its still there but no longer rotate..i have a 91 3.4 dohc engine...
i think it broke in the 4000 rpm range..
how much risk that my head are damaged??
what would be my best solution right now..i wonder what i should do..only replace the belt and hope that everything is ok...or well im at it..change the engine completly.(maybe a 96-97 one???)how much trouble i could have by swapping it??
im damn confused to what i should attempt...paying big shit for a 210 000 km engine with a broke belt..or go for the big thing and change it all...damn thing

any advice, help greatly appreciated..tks to all

Well, there is some good news. GM made your engine to be a non-interference motor. I have a 92 (now has over 200k) and the timing belt broke 2x on highway speeds during the course of driving.

However, there is always a chance you snapped a valve .. or a whole row ..

If it was me, I would install a new timing belt and go from there.

About the swap .. the 96-97 will require some modifications to work. It has been done many times though. But if you were to go that far as to do a swap, while not do a basic rebuild to your current existing block that came with your car?

If your upto, why not remove the heads and take them to a machine shop to check them out.

    Good luck,

$3000 for a complete rebuild. The (dealer) mechanic quoted me just about $2000 for just a timing belt and distributor o-ring fix.

Don't go to the dealer, simple as that:P The heads are probably fine, with good enough odds that I would just put a new belt, idlers, tensioner, and tensioner pulley in it and time it. That is money well spent cause even if the motor is fucked, you can pull them for another motor (though no 96-97). I personally wouldn't use a 96 motor in an automatic but there are plenty of others that have done it so they might disagree with me.
