  • Main bolts: replace or reuse?

Sorry to be a pain in the ass with all these questions, but after forking out a mighty fuckload of cash in the process of rebuilding my motor, I want it to be as best as I can get it for my budget. I'm going to start assembling today, and I'll put up a build thread for you guys.

Same 91' motor with 96' pistons, and fully rebuilt. Machinist said that the main bolts should be fine to reuse, and that as long as they torque fine (which he did to line bore the block), they're good. I also notice that of all the bolts available to buy (head bolts, rod bolts), that the Mains are the one bolt that I don't really see for sale anywhere, hinting that maybe they're not common replacement items? My rods are already rebuilt and fitted with ARP hardware, so I'm good to go there.

the only thing that makes me wonder, is that the torque specs are something along the lines of XX Ft/lbs + 75 degrees of torque. Does this mean that they're torque to yield? Already yielded bolts are baaad. So should I just reuse mine, or is it recommended to change em, and where do I get new ones if I change them? Thanks guys!

Ok, there seems to be a real black hole when it comes to main bolts for this motor. I called the dealer today and found out that they can still be had for about 4 dollars a stud, and slightly more for the bolt. About 33-36 dollars total - not bad. They have to be ordered. GMpartsdirect.com is showing these parts are available for 1.50 per stud and like 3.02 per bolt. The parts guy told me that the studs came in packs of 4. You need 7 studs and one bolt. But wait - on my 91, I have 8 studs - there IS no bolt... The bottom end had all factory bearings stamped 90 and 91, so it must have come that way from the factory. The factory oilpump fits fine, and my new Melling lightly touches the stud, though the lightest touch with a grinder to the casting of the pump or the stud would fix that. I'm going to save myself the hassle of dealing with the bolt and just go with 8 studs.

      Bolt part number: 476543
      Stud part number: 10162001

      Hope this helps somebody!

I though ARP made a main kit for 660 engines?

They do - 2.8 stuff, which is where I got my rod bolts (they work great, btw). But as for the mains, unless you want to ditch the windage tray (baaad idea with the 7K thing), I don't think ARP has anything us DOHC'ers can make use of. Bummer.
