  • Removing axels from trans?

95 Grand Prix GTP, 3.4L DOHC

How do I get the axel separated from the trans? I disconnected the hub assembly and then I tired pulling the axel loose right at the trans, but it seems to come out only a little bit and then wants to go back in like a spring. I tried using a screw driver and a crow bar, but with the crow bar I have no room to get in there and pry it out. Any ideas?

Remove the driveaxle from the tranny using a slide hammer and adapter.

Make sure you suppot the CV joints.

I went to autozone to rent a slide hammer and I checked it out and it made now sense. It didn't look like anything like the pictures I have seen of it.

I ha the same problem when I took the axle out for the alt. It seemed to me like I was putting a lot of pressure on one side of the axle and it was getting hung up from the other side. What I did was lift the car a little higher (I used the highest setting on my jackstand. This caused the back tire to come off the ground too.) and get a prybar on both sides of the axle so you can put equal force on both sides. It still took a little grunting but it popped right out. BTW, I also supported the lower control arm with my jack. I lifted that bad boy until it wanted to lift the car off the jackstands. Kinda keeps the cv joint straight. I hope this helps!

I finally got it. I used a crowbar and a screw driver and pryed it on both sides and it popped out.
