  • Lifters/TDC/Oil pressure gauge inquiry

I have taken my 3.4L out of my 1992 Z34 and it is currently on an engine stand. I am changing the Head gaskets because they are blown. I am replacing every gasket and seal that I can since I will be having it all apart anyway. Here are a few questions for anyone:

    1. How do you keep the lifters in the cam carrier from falling out of the bottom upon cam carrier removal?

    2. I noticed that when I set the cams to TDC, all of the factory timing markings align except for the rear cams. They are off by a tooth. When I install my new timing belt, do I have to align the rear cams by the yellow factory markings just like the front cams?

    3. I would like to install an oil pressure gauge in my car, where would I connect this gauge on the engine? Which sensor would it connect to? I heard that I have to replace my factory oil pressure switch sensor into an oil pressure sender sensor before I can consider this. Is this true?

    1. Assuming all liquids are drained out of engine. Turn it upside down or on its side past 90 degrees. Before taking the last cam carrier bolt out. When you reassemble it. You can use an assembly lube (like white lithium grease) applied to lifter face and bore to hold in carrier. (if your installing right side up)

    2. Fallow this link and read info about cam timing. http://www.60degreev6.com/index.php?...ewtopic&t=5181

    3. I'm not sure if there is another oil pressure port. You can use a brass t fitting to tie in new oil pressure sender. Leaving original switch hooked up. IMHO a gauge and a warning light is the best setup.

i briefly touched on this be4. in the wiring diagrams there is an oil pressure signal wire, perhaps an electric guage can be spliced into it.

Z34's had the option of having a oil pressure or a voltmeter. Get the cluster with the oil pressure, and replace the sensor, with a Oil Pressure Sender, and voila, you have a oil pressure guage.

FWIW: It is located down by the oil cooler.
