can it be done and what will be the gaines also what would be needed to do this? would it worth doing? just trying to get some more power from this engine theres a guy here in baltimore that spanks my ass with o3 gtp just want him to think about it the next time we meet. he didnt get me by much maybe a half a car . can this engine be tweak enough to keep up with a 3.8 sc gtp and if so what would be some of the mods

RE: 96 heads and cam carriers on 94 3.4
of course it can. if a honda civic can run 14's anything is possible. if u plan on doing porting and such to your heads a 96 set would be best. out of the box they are about the same but bolting on a set of 96 heads wil give you about a .25 bump in compression. the 96 cams will move your operating range a little higher (about 400 rpm) but may net you a few extra horses. also i have read the pre-96 valvesprings are stiffer, so u use your 94 springs on your 96 heads and that higher rpm profile might give you some more max rpm(not a lot) in theory that would be a solid bolt-on if u can get the parts cheap.
as far as parts only thing you would need would be a set of 96 exhaust manifolds and crossover pipe. and a they will bolt right u to your stock downpipe no sweat. while i am at it the 96+ intake swap is popular but i don't believe they are that much better i personally like them b/c they are easier to modify and look better. i have always thought the secret lies in the heads and cams.
96 stuff has 15 more hp than the previous. the myth was shot down about 94-95 lq1's having 210. they have 200 just like the 91-93 just better gas mileage and a tad better throttle response. every1 says there should be more power with all the changes and i think it is b/c the 96 engines have alot more emissions crap and some of it is eliminated when going to a 94-. as far as tweaking go with that, and ud pulley, gut your cat if u don't have emission testing, basic weight reduction techniques, CAI, colder stat and a chip should make him notice you. he is still going to cream you on the dig though until about 1/3-1/2 way.
i don't know your budget but i gues you are mechanically inclined if u talk of swapping heads, go with a 3k stall hands down the best mod IMO and port those heads be4 you put them
and you should be able to take him out. u might be able to take him out with less but i was going for overkill
other things to consider are porting your ex manifolds be4 you put them on if you get 96er's usually the service is dirt cheap and may net 1-5 hp. i am having mine done along with some engine beautification for free in exchange for polishing a valve cover. porting your intakes. u can find 91-95 intakes everywhere in the yards and probably on here for dirt cheap too.
only PITA is finding a set of 96 heads/cams also make sure you get the drive gear too. most times you have to get a whole motor or practically buy a whole motor to get these pieces. ope this helps. The Official Rotating Mass Nazi

RE: 96 heads and cam carriers on 94 3.4
Pointless. 96 cam carriers are identical to 91-95...cam timing may or may not be different as the specs I saw were for 97 which did get different carriers, cams, and lifters. The heads will bump up compression but thats about all they are good for until proven to flow better or give more power. Yeah, ive read the same old bullshit about how they look better, exhaust ports are wider so they should flow more, whatever. This is the same crap all over again with the "sodium filled valves" and "forged bottom end".
How is 210 for 94-95 a myth? Just curious if someone actually put their engine on an engine dyno. How about showing me a 96 dyno then since it has 15hp more than everything else.
Change your cam timing and your low end will be greatly improved along with still having a stronger mid range. I wouldn't even bother racing people with stock cam timing cause it sucks so much ass. I had my car for 1 day before I changed the timing.Ben

RE: 96 heads and cam carriers on 94 3.4
oh yeah the egr mount on the ex manifold is different. the tubing itself is identical so just take it to a machine shope and cut/ braze the 94 egr/top to the 96 bottom.
until some1 actually measures a 96 set, i too was also going by the figures i got from this site on the different cam timing and it's affect. on the heads it was as i said earlier out of the box they are the same performance-wise as the previous but the 96 heads will give a bump in compression.
actually, some1 claimed to have dynoed it. i will have to do some digging to find it again. mechanically the engines are identical(assuming auto version). same compression, same specs same heads, same intakes. only major differences they recieved was the 24x sfi system and replaced the MAP with MAF. the 24x stuff is only good to 3000 rpm i think then it reverts to 7x which is the same as the 91-93. the MAF is unquestionably more efficient than the MAP but unless there are some big differences in the fuel/spark tables i don't see how they are that different from their predecessors.
you have the data, how about it? any changes to fuel/timing?
after i get my shit straight i do plan on having a set of 96-97 heads flowbenched and put to rest all the speculation.
the 94 bodies however got a few changes. bigger rear brakes i hear and some other braking fix over the previous and bigger rads as well as speculated additional clearence to make changing the rear plugs easier. The Official Rotating Mass Nazi

RE: 96 heads and cam carriers on 94 3.4
Fuel and timing ss very different. Still, 169 hp at the wheels stock though, about 175 without the screen tuned and pig rich still. So yeah, still needs a dyno run with the fuel where it should be at WOT without the screen. Still working on a better chip for bone stock yet I dunno if its possible to get anything on a stock setup cause its a lot better on fueling with the screen and stock.Ben
