since the dohc heads have a ton of material im gonna guess the heads wont be warped. i remeber flat head v8s had a problem with that, mostly went away with ohv, and im sure the ohc or dohc are even tougher than ohv. but its posible. id have to think a warped head on a tdc motor might cause problems for the cams themselves, so if there wasnt any cranking probs.... i'm voting in favor of gaskets, but then, even a bad gasket starts, unless its just that bad. good thing to have them checked sisnce they are off anywaysIf you aren't friends with a liar, you aren't friends with anyone.

These heads can be warped, I did it to mine when the car over heated, have to take off about 8 thousandths to use them again. Not gonna do it because it will raise compression too much for the turbo.
As far as the problem, i would get the heads checked out and put the engine back together and run the compression tests with new gaskets. If it fixes the problem your good to go, if not, probably bad rings.

Bolt the heads on and run a cylinder leak down test. http://www.650motorcycles.com/LeakDownTester.html
easy to make instructions on that page. That way you will know the condition of you rings. Valves have to be closed for test so, no cams no problem.1997 Z34 Monte,: testing 4 exh cam\'s, RSM STB, K&N, Eagle077 245/40/ZR18 Nitto Extreme

well, got the heads back today. valve seals are about 95% which is very good for such mileage and the heads are not warped. i figure now it has got to be either rings or gaskets or a little of both. leakdown test sounds like a great idea. 1 thing though i know how to get tdc on cyl 1# but how do u get tdc on the rest of them? or is it even necessary to get tdc with a leakdown?
u just need a air compressor and a leakdown guage right? any particular pressure i should bring it to?(never done a leakdown test be4)The Official Rotating Mass Nazi

With no camshaft it doesnt matter were the crank is. As long as the valves are closed. The info on that link i posted will walk you through it.

hey, got the heads bolted on and torqued. i am really thinking the rings now b/c in that pic where there was some antifreeze when i pulled the heads, to day i checked it and it was gone. probably leaked past the rings. but all i have to do now is get a leakdown tester and find out for sure. The Official Rotating Mass Nazi

How much was the leakdown? Broken rings?
Sorry to hear that.1997 Z34 Monte,: testing 4 exh cam\'s, RSM STB, K&N, Eagle077 245/40/ZR18 Nitto Extreme
