  • Rev Limiter??

Hey Guys, I'm brand new to this site. Very Cool. I thought I would see if you guys could help. I just recently resurrected a '92 Olds Cutlass Supreme with the 3.4L. I bought the car non-running for $400 (lady said it had a bad starter...yeah right!) After doing a head job, timing belt, MAP sensor, and oh yeah a starter, I am at the point where I can drive the car down the road. Here's where I have a problem. When I rev the engine while the car is sitting in park, it will only go to 3500rpm's. When I take the car on the road, it seems to accelerate just fine. While driving I can put the car in neutral and rev the engine all I want. What am I missing? Is this normal? The 3.4 DOHC is new to me but my experience and gut tell me this is something simple that I just can't see.

I should also note that the car acts like it has a miss (shakes and shutters - clears up - shakes and shutters, etc.) at cruising speed. I think replacing the wire will cure that ill.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated and thanks for all of the great info on this motor from this site. It was a big help!

    RE: Rev Limiter??

Sounds like proper rev limiting. For the shaking, it may be the tranny slipping. The other causes of misses with this engine may be a rather long list. Start by checking the basics, plugs, wires, resistance of coils, fuel delivery.

      Rev Limiter??

So this car does have a rev limiter at 3500rpms????

As for the stumble, I'm sure it is the plug wires etc. Any other thoughts?

      Thanks

        RE: Rev Limiter??

Yes the DOHC's are rev limited at 3500 in park and in neutral, when stopped or at very slow speeds. While rolling in neutral at speed you can rev all you want, thats normal. You COULD get a chip from this site's store, with which you can disable the rev limiter if you desire.

          RE: Rev Limiter??

They all rev limit at 3500 in park. Seems like a good feature to me, stops little kids and cheap car starters from fucking up your engine. I think most don't limit in neutral until you hit the shift point, 7250 or something. The shuttering is probably plug wires, but I would change the plugs too because it is a cheap fix. I changed the wires in mine and that solved the problem, but I did the plugs first and it didn't help.
