  • Dropping Subframe on 95 Monte Carlo: Good or bad?

So I finally got my new engine (THANX RICK!) and was wondering something. I planned on dropping the subframe on a '95 Monte Carlo with the engine and tranny still mounted. I plan to do this due to how bad the old engine was leaking oil and other goodies all over the place. I have heard good and bad about this. Wondering if anyone has done this and if it was worth it or not. I have the means to pull the engine normally. I can get the tools to drop the subframe as well. Any kind of info would be nice!! Thanx

Drop it, it is way faster and good luck trying to pull the engine out the top without pulling the tranny, or even with the tranny there is no room. there is no special tools required to drop the subframe, you just need a jack, a 15mm socket, impact gun, and an 11mm to disconnect the input shaft on the power steering rack. to drop the engine this way shouldnt even take 4 hours if you know anything about cars. your best bet is to drop the subframe, ive done it so many times and everytime im glad i did it.

It is the best way. Allows easy access to tranny and engine. You can fix everything at one time. Leaves engine bay clear to do as you will. Paint, replace the coolant line, (The tough one), even some neat suspension work if you want. Replace all the mounts with poly. Paint the subframe. I can't imagine doing it any other way. Most good rental shops have a subframe jack you can get for about 30 bucks a day.

As others have said, dropping it out the bottom is the best way. Be careful with the input shaft to the steering rack. Make sure it's completely free before you begin to drop the frame. And obviously be careful with all the electrical.

Does anyone know if there are poly lower engine and tranny mounts available? I know you can get a solid lower motor mount to replace the stock hydraulic, but I want to go poly if I can.
