  • dohc headache = code 42

intermittently throws the code. symptoms; sputters/pops while starting up, while idling, rpms sputter and die if i don't stablize the rpms, this occurs while braking to a stop or braking for a corner. this crap started thursday and finally today it threw the 42. man was i happy to see SES!! :P i'm going to rule out the tps and iac, they are no more than 2 years old. i might check the map, and i might point a finger at the O2 and amybe the ignition module(icm). the auto zone lady seemed sure that the control module(i assume she meant icm, but just said control module). any insight to this headache will be appreciated

Well, it is either fuel, or electrical. (Man, I'm a lot of help) scootin' to a corner to hide.. :P Actually code 42 is an ignition spark control problem. Does it do this only at operating temp? Reason I ask is, sometimes the control module can develope a crack that that only opens at operating temp. Hence the random code 42 showing. If it was toast, it would throw the code all the time. Same thing used to happen on the HEIM. Only it was on the pickup. Also check your connections at the ignition module. Maybe a corroded connector. A good cleaning and die-electric grease might solve it.

When my knock sensor went stupid, it would give me that code sometimes as well. I think it was from water or something cause it went away a month later (when i turned the code back on the ECM, it didnt come back when i put it back on).

got it diagnosed as the ICM(ignition control module). for the stalling and crappy starting, dirty throttle body. they quoted $360 something for it all. $165 for the ICM alone, nah! autozone's $80 sits better w/me

it was the ICM and it is fixed. don't wait to replace the icm when code 42 shows up, cause it'll kick you in the nuts and walk all over you!
