  • thermostat keeps getting stuck open

This is the 4th thermostat that has gotten stuck open on me. About 1 month of use and it gets wedged all the way open, it just doesn't make much sense to me why they do that. Any idea's?

Just lucky I guess... Maybe try a different temperature AC Delco one...
Okay now, that's enough of that.

too much heat. sounds like the spring inside is getting heated past its breaking point. not trying to insult your intelligence, but did you mix water with your coolant? water increases the strength of the coolant dramatically. i'd have to give you a long ass chem lecture for you to understand why. but anyway, you think maybe radiant heat from the turbo is getting it? it is really close to that area.

If the thermostat was getting that hot with coolant running over it, the engine would be toast. Is there any kind of crap build up on it, like its getting gummed up and not able to close? Ever see what that powder cooling system sealer stuff does? leaves this gummy crap everywhere! but I doubt you would have used something like that. This is a really weird one since its reoccuring. I'd say maybe try a genuine delco t-stat or a 180* But even then, 4 thermostats crapping after a month each, theres gotta be some hidden cause.

The exhaust side of the turbo is maybe 6" away. The first 2 did it when the engine was entirely stock, the second 2 turbo'd. This last one was a 180* and during its life it never saw above 220* (according to my guage at least). Come to think of it I bought the car with a stuck open thermostat, so that makes 5 total.

Yes, I use a 50/50 mix, when I spring a leak then more water then coolant is used. I have never used any sort of flush or anything aside from coolant and water in it, and there isn't any buildup on it.

                Just throwing out some things....

Is there an over pressure in the coolant system? Inefficient water pump? Restricted flow somewhere? Do a trial run without the t-stat.
                ?????????????????????????????
