  • Timing Chain-maintenance

    Hello to all,

Just wondering if the Timing Chain, (Not Belt) needs any kind of maintenance or replacement? I am waiting for parts to replace my Timing Belt, and just realized... daaahhh... that there is a Timing Chain on the Intermediate Shaft behind the Belt setup. I'm no Mechanic, so this motor is new to me...even tho i have owned it for 8 years. I always got mechanic to fix any problems, but due to this site, i have the confidence & knowledge to work on it myself.

The car- 94 Lumina Z34 has about 160,000 mi on it & i have only had the belt changed once. I am determined to learn how to change it myself, so i got my fingers crossed hoping it don't snap while waiting for parts.

Just wondering if Timing Chain is something to worry about or will it go forever

    RE: Timing Chain-maintenance

well the timing chain is probably gonna last awhile, it will stretch but doing the timing belt will correct the timing, but now the problem is the timing chain tensioner, on my brothers 91 gtp it broke and we ended up replacing the chain too because it was only $35.if you feel confident in changing it i would do it, it is a very big job but i did it when i was 15 years old, but i have been told by some of the best mechanics around that i am a genius and am better than alot of the other mechanics that they have worked with, and that i am going to go very far in this field. i am extremely mechanicly inclined, but i think that if you have enough confidence you can do it, it is a very tight spot to work and the engine has quite a bit of miles on it (roughly around the same when my brothers broke) if you think you can do it then try it, if you get stuck you can always come on this site for help, its a great source.

A Genius ...Man, i could sure use a Genus to help me! I was going to ask if you live near New Orleans, but i now see that you are in Canada. Thanks for the vote of confidence. I guess it was not a proper question to ask at the time, because even if everyone told me it Definitely needed to be done...I am kinda out of funds @ the time and couldn't do it anyway. Believe it or not, i have over $1000.00 of parts ordered to get motor back up and strong. This is not just the Timing Belt and Pulleys, but sensors and gaskets for all kind of stuff. Very expensive! My wife says i'm stupid for putting money into a car that has a Bluebook value of Shit The radio went out, the Air Conditioning has a leak, needs new tires, struts, shocks...etc. But the fact is, I love this car...Good gas mileage, and halls ass. I would put it up against a few V8's that i had when i was younger. Gotta love it.

I will just leave the chain alone, & if it, or the tensioner breake, i will just pull the whole motor out and rework heads and all when fixing, as i plan on driving this good ole 60DegreeV6 till the day i die

the chain and tensioner are really not that expensive, it just alot of labour, you shoud price one out, just tell them your a mechanic at a local shop or somthing and they will give it to you gor cheap.
