  • 13 DEGREE RETARD ON TIMING

Hi to all...I am New to car mechanics, but thanks to 60DegreeV6 i have been able to do some Maintenance & Repairs on my 94 Lumina Z34
3.4L(DOHC) Thanks to all for your help & kindness in helping others!!!

My question is about the 13 Degree Retard on the Timing for a little Extra Power. I am getting ready to change my Timing Belt, Idler Pulleys & Tensioner Pulley. If i Retard the Crank Timing Mark, by the 13 Degrees, do i need to do anything other, or different with the actual Cam Positions, or do they get put or set to where they should originally go?

Hope this doesn't sound like a dumb question to you mechanics, but i really do not know much about the timing, and want to get it right.

RE: 13 DEGREE RETARD ON TIMING

You will have to set each cam flat seperate instead of together as a pair. Other than that, there is nothing else different to the procedure. A guy on fiero.nl is making up some nice cam hold down tools to make this job easier, and they will be featured on the 60V6 store once they are in production. He is looking at at least a month though before that happens so I dunno if that will help you out much or not.

Hey sappyse, Thanks for the Fast reply! Do you know if this really works ...Can you feel a differance? If so, Do you know if there are any links or pages that show the propper placement of cams for this to work.

It will be about a month before i can save up enough to do this anyway, but it has 160,000 mi. on it and the last time i had Timing belt changed was at 70,000 mi. Keeping my fingers crossed and not jamming it like i love to do, as i just know it is about to snap.

There is no real way of taking pictures of the cams to show you for reference because it is only 6.5 degrees at the camshaft. This is why I use the timing mark on the site. I don't believe you have the same setup on the 94+ though so you may have to figure out the stock timing mark first and go from there.

I have noticed a nice increase in power after 4k, and barely anything lost from 2-4. Its only really idle that is hurt, and I raised my idle speed so I have no issues. I don't know of anyone dynoing it though. I hope to get some dyno work done this year but I have no idea when that will happen.

          Is this correct....
when I disassembled my engine (95DOHC) one set of cams had flats up and the other set was down. This is with the timing belt on and the engine was running pretty good. It sounds like you are saying that both cam flat sets are up for stock timing>

No man, for stock timing it will show just like you stated. one bank will be flats up and the other will show flats down. And from what I have read the bitch will start and run(like shit) with both banks flats up.
