The most I've heard of getting out of these engines (so far) is between 350 and 400 hp. One of those is a turboed 3.4, stock internals AFAIK. It's in a Fiero owned by Chris West of West Coast Fieros in Southern California. I think he just sold the engine setup and is now working on a turbo Aurora project (!!!). The other 3.4 I know of has tons of internal mods including expensive head work and porting. It's also in a Fiero. It's owned by a guy up in Washington state that goes by DKOV on PFF (fiero.nl). Not sure if he's on here.
As far as aftermarket parts availability, there's essentially nothing compared to whats out there for 3.8SC engines. You're going to do a lot of custom work instead of just buying off the shelf go-fast components.
It's my understanding that the intake, cams, and exhaust are what need to be worked on with this engine. The intake is not good for making high-end power, although the later intake design (96-97) is better. There are NO camshafts available in the aftermarket but there are companies that can add material to the factory cams then regrind them to the desired specs. This gets expensive, as you have four cams to get the work done on.
Personally I would go with a turbo setup if I could pull it off in California and still pass smog. It seems to be the easiest way to go to make power.
Stay tuned. I'm sure some of the more veteran members will chime in soon!
