  • stutter stall

When im braking the car likes to stutter and then often stalls, giving it gas does nothing. It does it sometimes as well just idling, would this be the fuel filter??? (gas mileage is at about 82km to a 1/4 tank, normally about 100-120 with my driving style, although it is alot colder).

If not fuel filter its probably the whole spark plug issue or alternator or something... (its a stick and i've read alot that the manuals like to stall cause their plugs are gay or something)

no SES codes anymore, although up until i let the car sit for awhile during christmas breaks it would throw one once in awhile, usually after driving for awhile.

Idle is about 900-1000 once its warmed up and it stutters and drops to about 500, then comes back then 200, then 0 .

if not fuel filter what else??? and how hard is a fuel filter to change in -39* Celcius weather in a 2 car garage with an international taking up one whole side of the garage. Or should i just pay to have it changed...

    RE: stutter stall

Fuel filter is easy to change. It takes maybe 45 minutes if you've never done it before (I think that's how long it took me, I forget... I changed mine about 1.5 years ago). This sounds like a typical 5 speed to me though. Check all the vacuum lines. I replaced EVERY vacuum line I could find under the hood and that helped my stalling problem a lot. Also Ben's chip helps alot too with the slightly raised idle and better driveability. You'll still stall occasionally, though, but a lot less.

I also think the stalling problems we have might be caused by an inadequate alternator at idle. I think if someone were to sell a high output alternator it would help. But I dunno, just a thought.

      RE: stutter stall

alright, thanks, I actually just ordered Ben's chip, so that should help... i hate vaccuum lines, i know there has to be a couple off i just really do not want to go in behind the engine and get at those, if the plenum ever comes off, then i will...

Where abouts is the fuel filter? by the fuel tank im guessing?

And ya i agree on the alternator. If the stereo is going it likes to stall more often, as well as rolling windows down, turning on rear defrost, or going from off to full blast on the heater.
