  • Newer vs Older heads.

If anyone would be willing to help me out with this...I know there have been threads on this before, probably on the old forum though. But does anyone have pics, a thread, or a brief and easy way of telling newer heads apart from older heads 91-95 vs newer? Im curious because i just got about 50% of a 91-93 motor and about 90% of another mystery motor...and 100% of another 91-93 motor thats locked up. Out of this im building one good motor. Im trying to figure out if there they are all the same since the complete motor is about an 1 hour away and is still intact...i dont have an easy way of comparing. Other than that im just curious if its possible to get the compression boost of the newer motors into a 91-93 setup. or in other words a 91-93 shortblock with 96+ heads and if its easy to do or has been done before.

    Thanks!

I have a different but related question. How is the compression difference done between the manual vs automatic trans in the 91-93 years? If its pistons is there an easy way to compare them or if its heads how are they different?

96 heads have wide oval ports. 91-95 are D shaped. The compression for the manuals was from less relief in the pistons for the valves. You can run 96 heads on a 91-95 motor with 96 exhaust manifolds as well, and increase compression. 91-95 are 54cc and 96-97 are 51.5cc. Im not sure how the heads flow though compared to each other, and the combustion chamber design is very different for the 96 motors.

hmmm interesting. I definitely have a set of 96 heads here. I also have the some 91-95s but their condition is questionable to because they are on the blown motor. So is the exhuast manifolds are all i need to make them work? Im going to go outside now and compare the intakes because ive gotten all the way to the cam carriers so far on the blown motor and see if the intake set up is any different. i'll get some pics up in a few hours just so i can make sure. thanks!

The 96 intake manifolds are different but are compatible between each head style. For an auto, I would use the 91-95 setup. The 96 setup is really meant for top end and a 4T60-E isn't gonna appreciate that too much. Also, you would definetly want to retune the computer for it but it does work with the stock computer. You live close enough to me though that tuning shouldn't be a problem if you don't do it yourself:P

If you do have the 96 setup and want to swap it on, you will need the fuel rail, lower intake, plenum, TB and arm, modified radiator hose. If you don't want to use this setup, I would love to have at least the manifolds to do some research.

Alright im not so sure anymore.... Im looking at them more closely now and i can see that they have a little bit of a D shape to them, so maybe im wrong. here are some pics, and a pic of the car if anyone is interested.

The heads pictured are 91-95 heads.

WTF is up with that two tone paint job? That isn't factory, except the Dale Earnhardt edition's bare paint was similiar.

Yeah i mentioned that in a previous post. Its a custom paint job and its debadged except for the bowtie, it looks pretty nice but needs to be touched up and i dont think it was EVER buffed after it was painted. Also the pinstripe is coming off in some spots and they whoever it was dumb enough to paint over the molding on the windows! yuck! nothing i cant fix though and besides, my wife likes it and its for her...thats what counts!

It doesn't look that bad, I kinda like it. If there was a small red pinstripe between the black and grey, it'd look real nice. Yah it does need buffing and cleaning.

yeah its got a neat red pinstripe between them but i will probably replace it since its worn. Oh yeah you cant tell from this pic, but the louvers are silver/gray like the bottom 1/4 of the car, really really sets off the car. Its got a sunroof too--i havent seen a lot of Zs with sunroofs. is that factory or something the dealer would add on i wonder.

I think it was a dealer-installed option. They are kinda rare I guess, but you see em around.
