  • 3.4 DOHC Timing off???

I recently had a used 3.4 dropped into my 95 GTP. Before they put it in I suggested they replace the timing belt since the engine had just under 70K on it. Listening to the exhaust at an idle makes me think the timing is not quite right. Maybe off a notch? What is the easiest way to check ? I am planning on doing a top engine gasket replacement soon, and thought that would be the time to check it out. Thanks in advance V6 masters!
If it\'s not high maintenance, it\'s probably boring.

You can pull the front cam cover and check the cam flats. You will have to rotate the crank though using a 15mm socket to get the flats up. There is a timing mark on the crank dampener found here.

You can sorta see the mark on the timing chain cover that this mark lines up with. But here is a better pic of it.

The front cams will be face up when the rear cam flats are face down. Anyway, you will need something to make sure the flats are timed right, called a cam flat tool.

You will have to pull the plenum to remove the rear cam cover.

Just got the chance to do the upper gaskets replacement, and sure enough both cams were off. Followed the instructions and she is running like a champ. I WILL NEVER TAKE MY GTP TO A MECHANIC AGAIN. I'm convinced that I can fix anything with the help of this page. I was contemplating timing at the 13 degree retard, but went with the stock just to be safe. Also found many screw-ups that previous "mechanics" left behind.

      THANKS FOR THE ADVICE/HELP.
