  • engine starting to rust while out of car

specifically the cams are getting some rust on the lobes.
Is this something that the maching shop will take care of?
Not much rust, but am I screwed? Should I remove cams and coat with oil?

I won't finish head work for another month.

You will need to have the cams polished now, like you would the crank journals. Then keep them oiled so they dont get any rust on them. The lobes and bearing surface (though no bearings:P) are the most important and cant have any rust or debris on them.

Damn it is hard to get the cam sprockets off. I have the special cam holder tool, but is it a reverse thread or something. I have to get the sprocket off first then the thrust plate right?

right. Its not reverse thread, so maybe the lock rings are rusted in there. WD-40 might do the trick.

One of the mechanics at work said to coat the whole assembly with oil then put it in a plastic bag, I have large enough zip lock bags.

that should slow down the rust till I can get the funds in Jan to have the work done.

You can spray your parts with WD-40 too, then do the bag thing. WD-40 is a great rust inhibator.
