  • Pulling Engine Question

Its all ready to go, everything is out. I decided to pull it out the top, so i hooked up the hoist and started lifting out the engine. After the engine is up a few inches, off all the mounts, the car starts to come up with it. The hoist pulls the engine up more, and the car comes up a little until a point where the engine stops coming up and pulls the car up even more. Nothing is hitting the brake booster, the downpipe is disconected, and the tranny is still on the engine. The only thing I know i have not disconnected is the alt connection but thats it and its hard to get at so i figured id go at it with the engine up and more room to work with it.

I need to get the engine out as soon as possible, but i have no idea what it is getting caught on, i can even see it getting caught on anything at all. This is out of a 1994 car, so it has the bigger booster.

Is anyone able to shed some light on this for me?

List of stuff I have removed or disconnected so far:
    Battery
    Air Intake
    Plenum
    ECM/Dash connection
Front, passenger side, and driver side mounts
    Dogbone
    Axels
    Fuel Lines
    Powersteering Pump lines
    Downpipe
    A/C Compressor

I may be forgetting somethings, but I am lost as to what to do.

Hmm. other places I can sugest, coolent lines, exhaust, trans mount, maybe missed some obscure electrical connection on the rear of the engine. Really sounds like a coolent/brake/fuel line or electrical connection to me. My best sugestion, re-goover EVERYTHING that you disconnected and then disconnect some other things just to be sure.

There seems to be a pattern there.

if you cant figure this out, maybe you shouldnt be pulling out the engine. i doubt its electrical or plumbing related cause they would probably break before pulling the car up, but maybe not. lift up the front end of the car and get under it and check everything with the engine in the air i dont know what to tell you but to keep looking. tranny mount?

Ya forgot to mention all coolant lines are out, radiator is out fans are out tranny mount on driver side is out. Is there another tranny mount? I have pulled engines before, but never front wheel drive or in a newer car like this, im very mechanically inclined to do so, i just cant find a damn thing that is causing this. thanks for the help.

There is a mount on the passenger side of engine that the axle goes through...its a B to try and disconnect. Basically I lifted the engine part way then took out the P-side axle. But I am sure there is a better way....

How is that one hard? Pull the axle (which has to be done anyhow), and then 2 bolts to the subframe. Anyway, I always pull the entire top half of the motor off when I pull the motor out the top. So much easier to see whats hitting, plus the block itself is not that big so its simpler to manuever it around. Pull the brake resevoir, check the trans to AC line clearance, trans mount, trans cooler lines, electrical harness/connectors that you may have missed, and starter wiring.

I got the passenger side mount off, I was hoping to not have to mess with the brakes and all the abs and that shit. It is definitly coming off the trans mount, ill have to recheck the clearance with the AC lines. All the electrical is good, i think ill go through everything again to make sure i didnt miss anything that needed to be taken off or unbolted. This Friday is the last day I will try before xmas break.
