So what's the P/N for the '96/7 belt, if that's the only difference?

Check with GMPD before buying the bolts. The idler pullies I ordered from them this past summer had new bolts with them.
I did my timing belt this summer on a 93 and I have to say it is a bitch, but once done, you will certainly feel a sense of accomplishment. If you are going to make the cam hold down tool (http://www.60degreev6.com/modules.ph...rtid=11&page=1), I would suggest beefing it up a bit. I used 5/8" sq key stock with the 1/2" welded on top then drilled the bolt holes. The bolts will then have to be 70mm instead of 50mm. This was my second attempt at them as the first ones bent all to hell when I tried to tighten the cam sprocket bolts, and yes, I had a sprocket holder also, but it slipped and that was all she wrote.
I also fixed the infamous o-ring, without grinding anything. Just lifted the plug up as far as I could (3/16"-1/4") and cleaned really well around and under it with a brake cleaner soaked rag and let it dry. I then took a Small Block Chevy distributor gasket and cut at an angle through the thickness of the gasket. Put some Permatex RTV Black under the plug and spun it around a bit. I then lifted it back up and slipped the gasket under, paying careful attention to the slit and making sure to spread a small amount of RTV at the slit. Set it down, thightened the hold down bolt and let it sit for a day while I finished the belt. It has not leaked a drop since.
Good Luck

Thats what you want. As far as I know, Dayco is the factory brand. That kit contains the tensioner pully (24503561) and the two required idler pullies (24503859).
You may still need the tensioner actuator. Anyone know if the actuator should always be replaced along with the tensioner pully? Is it the tensioner pully that fails or the tensioner actuator itself?

Anyone got the GM P/N for the '96-'97 belt? I'd like to price it at the dealership as I get wholesale prices there. Don't make me break out the microfiche... :PCurrent:

And I agree with replacing the tensioner along with the pulley. It can and will fail and should be replaced every 120k minimum.
I have never changed a belt on an early engine, so I don't know what would be unique to the later engine.Current:

I can't get them for a price cheaper than GMPD so I haven't bothered with them on the store.
www.rockauto.com would be another place to check but im not sure what all they have.Ben

Those might be for the serpentine belt, not the timing belt. The tensioner pulley looks awfully cheap for a metal part.
The timing belt is right but I have my doubts on the rest. THe timing belt component kit is 125 and I think its the belt with the idler pullies. The tensioner and tensioner pulley I have only found at the dealership or GMPD. WOuld be worth asking them about though to see if that tensioner is in fact for the timing belt and not the accessories.Ben
