The Engine is out of the Car.
    95 MC Z34 120k miles

    Questions is....

I want to take the heads in to get decked, ect.
Can I take the heads as a whole and have the shop also do the valves? or do I have to take it apart? I know (think) I have to take the camshaft carrier covers off.

I was thinking new valves springs and seats.

Any suggestions on what I should have done?

The car had a loopy idle, each spark plug looked different (coloration) and I was getting some dark smoke on hard acceleration.

I have the top and bottom gasket sets already.

I also bought the DOHC essential tool set, anybody need the clutch alignment tool?

well dark smoke could be a bad injector, blue smoke would be oil, i would definatly change the valve seals, and lap the valves, as for the springs and seats they are probably fine, just make sure you put the valves back in the same hole they came out of. ive rebuilt alot of heads, and with that many miles on them your vavle seals are probably shot. and actually i do need a clutch alinment tool, i was just aobut to go out and buy one.

the majority of machine shops I have dealt with have been pretty good, but remember machine shops have more than just your stuff there. To keep it simple, take off everything you can from the heads, tag it, bag it and put it where it wont get lost. Lots of times shops will remove parts from heads and forget to put them in. Not that the shops are dishonest, but when you are working on twenty sets of heads in a day, a person is bound to forget something.
If it\'s fun, it\'s probably illegal and if it\'s illegal I\'m probably doing it.

yeah the smoke on acceleration could also be bad rings if it is a blue grey color
but injectors are most likely the cause if its really black
as for decking the heads remember if you get them shaved too much it will affect valve timing on ohc motors
i think its 1 degree for every .020

          Finally got the heads off.

A tip for other newbies... There is still coolant in the heads so put a pan under the engine...

One of the head gaskets looks like corroded with white (probably from coolant).

Some head bolts have rust, should I replace them all?

Are changing the lifters kinda standard practice (115,xxx miles).

First time getting the head off of any motor. I'm glad my first was that racey chic we call the Z34 - 26 - 34...

you should always replace all the head bolts
after removing them they are no good cause they stretch when torqued to specs
