  • Delco plugs and gap

so...today i went to my favoritist parts counter to get my replacement platinum Delco plugs recommended for my motor and i came out surprised. did anyone else know that AC Delco changed the part number and now offer Iridium plugs in place of the platinums?

i didnt, so now have Delco iridiums to install.

also...when i pulled just one of my old plugs, i noticed the gap on it was .65 inches instead of .45. would this be where my shitty mileage was coming from?

    just curious...

The bigger gap might have been causing your MPG issue... not sure though. What does the sticker on the front crossmember say to gap the plugs at? I believe my 92/93 cars say .045.

i put .45 inches...but actually, it was .068i and my car is spec'd for .045i. i wonder if that would make my car not smell like gas when running. also...injector number 4's lower o-ring was shredded!

Shredded o-rings = bad. Good thing you tore your motor apart to find all these problems.

Larger gap can cause MPG problems, and a leaking injector I ring will definetly cause issues. A 96 GTP though may want .060 or something like that. I know GM increased the gap on the gen 3 pushrod motors but no clue on the DOHC.

            nope...'96 DOHC is .045i too.

Dave...tearing the engine apart led me to find many little things to replace. oh well...she better run like a damn champion when im done! just gotta get the motivation to finish polishing that damn cam cover.

I tried out .055 gap for a while. Slight low end torque increase but it would misfire bad above 4k or so.

I tried .075 with my DIS-4 in my 3.1 back in the day. It ran, gas milage was the same as stock but i didnt notice any gains. Put it back to stock and got 1-2 mpg with the box. Figured I could throw that in for whatever its worth.

96-97 DOHC's should be the same for plug gaps no matter what car they r in. my sticker on my car says .060 for plugs. ive looked at 95's and they say .045 so for whatever its worth, u might wanna re-check on where your getting your info from, because there shouldnt be a difference in plug gapping from 96 to 97..only 95 to 96

my service manual says .045 for it and thats what i have it set at. hopefully it doesnt hinder anything cuz i dont feel like pulling the upper intake again. havent run it yet because i need to finish polishing the cam cover still. just got back from an exercise for this past week.
