  • replacing lim gaskets need little help

since i have the engine out i think i will replace the lim gasket. it has 85k on it so i am sure it is about that time. anything special about the procedure i should know? or do i just set it into place and bolt it down?

2.jpg what's that crap on the coolant port? on the cylinder port, that oil residue is that caused by blow-by? And in 1.jpg, does that mean the gasket failed at the coolant port?

That is typical. Coolant that sits in one place, such as at that gasket, unde rhot temperature will corrode itself and turn brownish. It isn't anything to worry about. FYI changing your coolant regularly, or using Dex-cool will lessen/eliminate this.

Oh also, DON'T USE GASKET SEALER. It will take an engine hoist to remove it, TRUST ME.

I would replace the upper and lower manifold gaskets everytime you remove the intake manifold.

the reason i was asking about any special procedures is i noticed 2 bolt holes in the middle of the lim. do you use those to pull ht eintake down properly or something?

I am not totally sure on that...

I just worked from one side to the other slowly turning down (one turn), switched sides to do the same reversed in a criss cross pattern both directions. Once the bolts get to a point just before snugness reverse the pattern and start tightening them in a reverse opposite pattern. I have not looked at the torque down pattern latly, but working the bolts one on each side opposite of each other towards the middle is what I did. For ex. If you torque the bolt closest to the driverside rear, reverse that and goto the passenger side then opposite the position to tighten the bolt closest to the front passenger side. The bolts must be snug before torque'ing the bolt this way otherwise warping will be a result.

I guess I really am not sure what it the best way to bolt them down.

Always bolt match the bolt to the mate holes.

I did the gaskets on our LQ-1s. Those two holes in the center are to properly seat the manifold before you put the bolts in the side. When you first put the manifold on, run two of the upper manifold bolts down thru those holes with a bunch of washers for spacers. Just snug it down, not monster tight. You will find this will enable the side bolts to be lined up correctly without danger of stripping them. Once you get the other bolts started, remove the two center ones. Very easy job, piece of cake.
