  • 1993 Z34 main bearing

I've got a 93 lumina z34 3.4. My problem is that the main bearing went. I'm trying to find out whether it would be worth it to tear down the motor and replace it. I know the main bearing itself isn't expensive, but I can't find anyone to do the labor on it. Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated.

What kind of places are you talking to that wont touch it? The bottom end is no different than the 3400 so I dunno what the big issue is. I guess you may have to do it yourself or get a new motor if no one near you would touch it. Where you are? Maybe someone on here can help.

There is not a garage or dealership around here that will touch the 3.4 V6 DOHC. And we've checked every garage within 50 miles. Not even the GM dealership will fix it. They just want to replace the whole motor. And I can't find a motor for less than $1200 and I can't afford that. I'm located in NW Pennsylvania if anyone can help.

I'm about an hour and a half SE of Erie and about 20 minutes from the NY/PA border and Jamestown, NY. It's a little town called Warren. If that helps any. It's about 2 and half hours a little NE from Pittsburgh.

Oh, and I might possibly be able to come up with the money for a new motor if anyone knows of any decent ones!! Thanks!!

In the old small Hayes manual they list the procedure of how to do that without removing the motor,

if you have a blown main bearing you would need to get the crank reground right? what about the block? ill look in my dealership service manuals to see if they give a good way to do it.

I'm not a crank expert, but i think, it really depends on the damage, if any

well usually if you have a crank bearing problem there is damage, you dont want to do all the labour changing it and have it blow out again 5 min after it starts up, ive seen that before. how do you know your main bearing is shot whitetigerss53? when my brother had his motor rebuilt it had 300,000km on it and they sent us the old parts back and the main bearings still looked really really good and he beat the hell out of that car.

oh and by the way if you do take it to a dealership or even a garage it might cost over $1200, nothings cheap anymore, that why i only get alinments done by someone else, or if they let me use the rack ill do my own.
