Yeah I am definetly going to keep it duals no way would I go with a single. But where do you get mufflers? My exhuast broke right before it Y's so I I took my car to the shop to see how much it would cost and he said my mufflers are bad also and I need to replace everything the cat back and it would be $500...OUCH. So I am hoping I can do it myself and find some cheaper mufflers! But i don't really know what I am looking for. I went to autozones web site and put in my car information and they had like 5 different mufflers for it different sizes but they were only like 20 bucks? or do I need something else?1994 Lumina Z34

Holy shit, $500? I got my whole cat-back done (dual exhaust w/ new y-pipe) and new Magnaflow mufflers for like $320. It's 2.5" and 2.25" after the Y.
You know, it wouldn't be that hard for a fabricator to modify the rear bumper to only have one cut-out. I work off and on in a body shop and the guy that runs it is a genius. All you'd have to do it either bend the existing piece or cut it and plastic weld a new piece in to replace the driver's side cut-out.
Not hard, and it would be really cheap to, you probably wouldn't spend any more all together than if you just got y-pipe duals made.
Just a suggestion, and single pipe does sound a lot better on a V6.--Rob

I have a few theories on the exhaust on our cars, and you will listen to them and you will enjoy them.
First: With all this custom fabricating, why not put a single muffler before the Y, or a muffler with dual exits.
Second: Whats with all the performance exhaust companies "Making an exhaust that sounds like a V8". Its not a V8, its a V6 with 12 exhaust valves, make it sound like a V12, thats the goal of my car, even if it takes losing 5-10hp its going to sound like a goddamn ferrari. (no thats not the appitomy of rice). And yes i know this isn't possible using standard methods, thats why you screw around with stuff, invent something new and fancy (i dont have to worry about emissions, although i'd rather not kill innocent animals)
third: Has anyone figured out how to get rid of the rasp? Why dont we just get marblepacks, folgers can filled with marbles that the exhaust shakes, and that way it would always sound that way and people wouldn't be like, woh whats broken. Seriously though, im not spending a cent on my exhaust until that rasp is gone. I heard that if i were to get it back to 280hp with the ecu/spark curve/timing that the rasp would be gone, has anyone tried this... Or does anyone have a way to get rid of the rasp, resonators dont work, i have one before the factory exhaust, didn't even change the rpm of the rasp.2001 Mustang GT

I actually had very little, if any, rasp on my car. The full Magnaflow exhaust sounded really nice. Once you step on it, and get it above 4k, it sounds SWEET. I mean that growl is awesome. It isn't as quiet or smooth as a Ferrari, but not too far off either. Like a V8? Hell no, and never will be close.
After the headers tho all sound quality below 4k went to shit real fast. I'm almost embarrassed. But then I downshift and floor it, and the guy in the Z28 says "at least mine sounds good....."

Have you ever looked under ther car? There is no room for mufflers anywhere else other than the stock locations... the only thing you could do is weld in a few glasspacks inline. You'd probably need two or three to get a decent sound.
I wanted to use a dual-out muffler for my new cat-back but there was no room. Even if you convert to coil-over rear suspension space is still tight back there.
Eventually we'll solve the mystery
My advice: Don't use Flowmasters. Use something with a straight through design (my favourites are Magnaflows).--Rob

i was jokin about putting the mufflers anywhere else :P, unless... maybe if we cut out the spare tire holder and run a corvette style muffler...
Actually, the resonator does help, i listend for rasp more and its only from 2300-2600, and i never see those numbers when im driving anywhere other than on my street.
I was thinking about going magnaflow or borla with my exhaust, but im not sure how either really sounds. I liked the description Borla gave of theirs with the "Gives the Monte Carlo a deep unique ominous tone" or something to that effect, but unless i can actually hear one of these, it really doesn't matter. Does anyone have any sound files of their exhausts? or like, quarter mile videos or something, i can hear exhaust in those too
And i've already heard dykz (sorry if i got your name wrong, im just doin this fast) with the glasspacks. And i loved the way that sounded.2001 Mustang GT

My dyno video is deceiving... it was actually kinda raspy... and LOUD. Right now I have stock piping, hi-flow cat, 18" glasspack in place of the stock resonator, and dual chambered Magnaflow mufflers with 3.5" tips. It sounds the same as the video, except the noise is MUCH more controlled. It cut out a lot of the raspiness (I only get it when cold) and quieted it down some. I'm a firm believer that tips control sound just as much as mufflers. I have pretty big tips on it and I think that is the reason it's so loud.... then again it sounds phenomenal at idle when it lopes around with those tips.

haha nice, i want a video of the new exhaust . What made you go with the dual chambered mufflers? im thinking im gonna go with magnaflow now, possibly straight-through? I really have no idea what im doing, this is the first car that i have had that won't make me feel dumb for putting an exhaust on. I think 2.75, or 2.5 piping, hi-flow cat, resonator (or glasspack i guess), Magnaflow mufflers straight-through or whatever else you recommend (please provide me with a part number ), and then maybe some tips like the ones on the Sl600AMG (splitter style, oval shaped like stock Z34 tips, actually, i think the 2 on each side are the same size as the Z34 ovals).
What do you guys think/part numbers ?
and actually, should i get rims before exhaust?
And sorry for sniping this thread, its on topic and the original guy had his question answered so now im pirating it :P2001 Mustang GT

I wouldn't go any bigger than 2.5" exhaust. The only reason to go bigger would be if you boost it. If you like the stock tips, but want something nicer, look up Ractive tip #T815. The bigger you go on piping, the more popping/raspiness you get... the reason mine isn't bad is because it's still stock piping. I would get chambered mufflers because of their quieting ability since you will never outflow 2 x 2.25" mufflers.
