Relieve AC pressure

I am trying to remove engine for a rebuild. The Haynes and Chilton both say to relieve AC pressure at a shop. Do I have to go somewhere or can I do this at home with a tool.

You can do it at home but its illegal and bad for the environment. Its like the valve in your tire, press in and it releases the pressure. I would however have someone that can contain it do it for you.
