  • new/ rebuilt 3.4

I know im not a regular here, but i am quite frustrated with the 3.4 in my petty edition GP. Its basically shot, the head gaskets are shot, the ICM/coils are shot, etc.
In other words its time for a new 3.4...

what might I expect to pay for a rebuilt 3.4, and a new one? Im really in the dark on fixing this problem, and I need some input on having a better 3.4 put in. How hard would it be to do myself? Im not "in the know" on engines at all. Thanks in advance.

It's not to hard to rebuild one yourself, takes a few special tools but would definatily be worth your while. You would want to get new pistons, rings, timing components, gasket set, bearings, etc. You will have to at least check your lifters to see how they are and inspect your valves and seats for damage. You will want to clean the whole thing real well and have the block at least professionaly honed or bored, depending how bad it is. As long as it's a running motor I can't see you having any trouble keeping the rebulid less than $6-700.00USD, using top quality components. The benefit of doing your own rebuild is that you KNOW exactly what has been done to the bitch, and you KNOW it has been put together properly. Plus there is LOTS of good stuff you can do to it while it's apart too. P/P heads, polish valves, etc.

I have a copy of the GM assembly manual that I need to put on acrobat sometime. It will give you all the specs you need plus you can have it blueprinted if you want. I have no clue on what a machine shop would charge for the bore and hone and crank work. Should at least have it balanced and align honed or bored.
