  • Question : What is this hose?

Yesterday I drove to the store and on the way out I noticed a nice puddle of anti freeze running from under my car, 1992 Z34. I couldn't find where it was coming from so I started looking and I found the hose, I attached a pic but its hard to see, its near the center of the fire wall, its rubber but I can only see about a 1/2" of the thing but I see the coolant dripping out. And I don't see any other busted hoses but it is hard to see in there. What is this hose and what does it route to?

Its not the line that runs from the water pump along the passenger side into the heater core, that one is further towards the driver side than this one.

Also what sensor controls the fan operation? Both of the fans run when I pull a code but the last owner jumped a relay to make the secondary fan run when the car starts, I've also attached a pic of that too if someone can shed some light on that ...

    Thanks!!

The computer turns the fans on based on coolant temp and a/c demand.

As for the rubber hose on the firewall, that's the water drain for the a/c so it sounds like your heater core has ruptured.

Thanks, now it makes sense... how big a a job is replacing the heater core? Would I be able to get to it by tilting the motor?

The sensor on the radiator must have a role to play in the fans not functioning properly.. I know its bad but I just unplugged it for the time being since the fan runs all the time and the low coolant light is annoying.. if I replace that sensor and the relay. maybe there is hope... anyway I think ill fix it and sell it. The 3.4 is a PITA to work on lol.

Ill re-upload the pics later I guess they got removed from the host site..

The heater core is done from inside the car. I recommend setting a weekend aside for getting it done, it's a labor intensive job when you have to remove most of the dash. I have yet to do one on a w body, bit I can't imagine it being much different than an n body.

The sensor in the radiator has nothing to do with the fans, it only controls the low coolant light. They also wouldn't use a sensor in the radiator where it would have time to cool considerably when coolant temp is used in calculation of a few critical values for engine operation as far as the ECM is concerned. There are two coolant sensors on the engine. One on the end of the drivers side of the front head for the temp gauge and one in the lower intake that the ECM uses.
