  • Question : Replacing CKP to ICM Wire, 97 3.4L DOHC in 92 Cutl

    Hi guys,

Had a major issue with the original wire from the CKP to ICM going bad a few months ago. Being a teacher and going through a divorce I just haven't had time to replace it, and the first shop I gave it to (I used to trust) tried to tell me I needed an entire engine harness rather than just the small one. I have replaced the 92 3.4 DOHC with a crate 97 (and intake from a 97 Monte). I couldn't manage to get the wiring off from the bottom (just not enough space between the engine and Tran.

So here is my question. Do I have to take off the intake (seems the logical attack point) to replace this from the top? If so do I also need to take out the doggie bone in the front and try to ratchet it forward. (I have been leary of this, considering aluminium doesn't have near the strength steel does). If so will the only parts I need is the wire (already have in the box) and a gasket for intake?

    Thanks!

That sounds like a logical plan of attack to me. Don't worry about anything from winching the engine forward- the rubber mounts have enough give in them and where the mounts bolt too have plenty of strength in the aluminum to bite into. You may need to snake your arm around the exhaust manifold and I'm not sure how much clearance you have between it and the transmission.

Another possibility could be drop the exhaust so you can reach through where the downpipe is routed to go over the trans but you may run into the dame issue there with the clearance between the mani and trans. It's been a long time since I've been under a DOHC car with an auto trans that I can't say for sure, but at least you can get an idea with option #1 go see if #2 will be a flop.

What do I wrap the winch around? I was thinking about removing the top dog bone and trying to get something around it and the other mount (or that whole brace on the front) and do that.. but would love a bit more advice.

You could do that. Back when we lived in our doublewide our drive was on an incline so when it came time to change plugs I parked nose down. Then I would pull dog bone and the weight of the car and it being in park would rotate the engine for me. You could also put the dog bone bolt back in the hole for something to get a hold of.
